The new Dutch film museum, EYE, opens

EYE, the new Dutch film museum, opens to the public on 5 April 2012 in its brand-new building designed by the Vienna-based firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is bursting with activity in 2012. After a multi-year renovation project, the Stedelijk Museum will reopen with an eye-catching new façade. And the redevelopment of Amsterdam Noord on the north side of the IJ waterway continues to take shape with the grand opening of the EYE Film Institute’s striking new building.

EYE’s new complex was designed by the renowned Austrian firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, which was also responsible for the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Their design was governed by two motives: plural perspective and physiological effect. Along these lines, the entire building is a reference to the cinema-going experience as a game of light, space and movement. The white roof covering the building refers to cinematography and the façade reflects light in constantly changing conditions.

EYE Amsterdam – Further Information

In the spring of 2012, EYE Film Institute Netherlands will move into its new location on the northern bank of the IJ. EYE intends to be a gateway to the world of the moving image. The Vienna office of Delugan Meissl Associated Architects has translated this intention into a remarkable design that has been received with enthusiasm by the press and public alike. EYE is the first major arts institution to make the leap over the IJ, and it’s here that the Institute will grow into an inspiring cultural meeting place.

Ample Room

EYE’s new location will feature four modern film auditoriums: one with 300 seats, two with 120 seats and one with 80 seats. There is ample room for exhibitions, educational activities and other events. Workrooms, a film lab, a shop and a café complete EYE’s headquarters. In the summer, the sunny terrace will offer a great view over the water. EYE’s new location is in Overhoeks, Amsterdam’s new urban district named after the prominent Overhoeks Tower on the former Shell research site.

Collection centre

A new facility will be built near the main EYE building to house the Institute’s restoration, preservation and research activities, as well as the film library. This new building will provide a solution to a chronic lack of space that has existed for more than 20 years. Location

EYE’s new location is easy to reach by car, public transport and bicycle. There is ample parking. For pedestrians and bicyclists, there is a ferry departing from Amsterdam Central Station that reaches EYE in two minutes. The ferry is free and runs 24 hours a day.
