The clients wanted to provide ancillary income by renting out the lower floors for commercial use alongside their own residence in the city centre. In a dense surrounding context of 3-4 storey buildings, the building needed to be different and special, with a public area for commerce and a private area for the family.

Gyeryongsan Mountain has beautiful mountains and is considered one of the four most famous mountains in Korea in terms of feng shui geography, and was designated as a national park for the second time after Jirisan Mountain.

Enclosing a part of the surrounding green the pavilion creates a whole new perspective on the landscape and the function of a vantage point.

This design is an adaptive re-use expression of the International Broadcasting Center (IBC), built in 2018 for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. It is contextually inspired from the prominent lines found in the visual aesthetics of traditional houses found in South Korea called ‘Hanok’ (Korean: 한옥, 韓屋).

The initial proposals (by UNStudio, BIG, Steven Holl, Snohetta, Grafton and ALA) were first whittled down to three, then two finalists, before the winning design was finally announced. The winning consortium comprises design partners UNStudio and DA Group, Squint/Opera (digital content and exhibition design), Loos van Vliet (landscape design) and UNSense (community content).

The project’s total budget was $4000 for design, installation, and its maintenance for 6 months. As a Pavilion for Children’s Play, the aim is to awaken the children’s senses and create new play spaces for them to play together, to provide an installation work that children can play with their body in the outdoor exhibition spaces provided by the client.
