Pet forest NYJ, South Korea
This building is a remodeling project of an existing concrete structure, planned for use as a pet funeral home.
Standing alone, seemingly abandoned on the outskirts of the city, the existing building stood heavy and weary, as if its purpose had been fulfilled, waiting indefinitely for another user.
This evoked the image of children who had lived out their lives, their bodies rigid in death, yet also resembled children yearning to reunite with their families, waiting anxiously in the form and shape of something else.
Within the constraints of legal regulations, it shed its heavy stone exterior, long worn on the surface, and its interior, weathered by time. It was newly clad in a lightweight metal skin and transparent glass blocks.
As time passes, the surrounding environment is projected onto the metal exterior, coloring the building in vibrant hues and giving it diverse expressions, its appearance gradually fading.
On cloudy days, it shares a sorrowful expression; on clear days, a joyful one; and as the sunset falls, they will long for each other.
As time passes, the internal glass blocks gradually reveal their outline. When the sunset fades and dusk arrives, deepening the darkness, they begin to glow brightly, as if signaling their location to family.
This resembles the fading physical forms of children who have left the side of their beloved family, yet it also mirrors the children reborn here in a new form as Memorial Stones, shining infinitely bright.
Constructed with refined materials and a simple composition, this building is like a vast memory device that firmly and eternally stores and remembers the precious memories of children who have embarked on a long journey and their families, and then plays them back again.
