LEAF Awards Review for 2011

The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards is now in its 9th annual year and celebrates the best architecture globally in the last year.

The jury – comprising of Lucy Bullivant, Irving Brauer, Stephen Fisher, Angus Brown – were looking for “strategic excellence, marketplace impact and, above all, innovation and practical developments that challenge and change the way we evaluate the buildings of today”.

The Overall LEAF Awards winner for 2011 was Milanofiori Residential Complex, Milan, Italy by OBR

Part of a masterplan by Erick van Egeraat this building could be summarised as a C-shaped plan of 107 apartments where the outer and inner facades are exceptionally different from each other. The ‘outer’ one facing the street outside is more urban, and the ‘inner’ enclosing a park is more organic.

The plan, elevations and detailing by OBR are all of good quality, but for me what marks this project is the diaphonous ‘inner’ facade. It is hard to pin down, just like the layered translucencies of Jean Nouvel and Emanuel Cattani et Associés’ Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Paris (1995). The rippling glass facades also bring to mind the Renaissance Paris Wagram Hotel by Atelier Christian de Portzamparc.

e-architect have been showing studio mk27 works for years, typically they combine simple planes of exposed concrete with wood and stone. Punta House is one more in this strong lineage that sets the practice up as one of the best in the world. Although they haven’t the programmatic width of studios such as Foster + Partners or Zaha Hadid Architects they nevertheless show a masterful handling of materials and form.

An unusual building, quite different to previous buildings by Steven Holl, yet picking up on his interest in ethereal light. This project on the french coast is uplifting. FG+SG have just brought out a book with 374 photographs of this building, entitled ‘Three Days in Biarritz’, superb images by Fernando Guerra.

Best Sustainable Technology Incorporated into a Building 2011 went to Thyssenkrupp Quarter, Q1, Essen, Germay by JSWD Architekten with Chaix & Morel ETA

A group of buildings focused on Q1, the headquarters. The HQ building is the main draw, and although quite solid from some angles, its facade facing the pools is softened by ‘feather’ louvres. The building is energised by the twist of volumes around the atrium.

Best Sustainable Development in Keeping with its Environment went to EDF Archives, Bure, France by Lan Architecture

MIXED USE BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Boat, Belfast, Northern Ireland, by TODD Architects for Harry Dougherty

Judges’ Comments:

The Boat in Belfast in Northern Ireland sits on the newly revived Customs House Square, a gateway to the city next to the River Lagan. This 14-storey tower incorporates apartments above offices, and a restaurant and a bar at ground level. Its highly glazed facades exert solar control via a bespoke external aluminium louvre system with hardwood shading, and the Boat’s roof is a lightweight construction. We appreciate the fact that this innovative live/work/leisure building is almost certainly the first of its kind in the city of Belfast. As one of its few contemporary landmark buildings, it contributes successfully to its environment.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD SINGLE OCCUPANCY

Punta House, Punta Del Este, Uruguay, by studio mk27

Judges’ Comments:

Punta House overlooks a reservoir in the countryside close to the city of Punta Del Leste in Uruguay. With its simple, one level plan, the house’s orientation strongly connects it with its environment. The surrounding landscape can be seen through folding, carved wood masharabiya screens that open out to nature, while the design nonetheless achieves a high level of privacy. Horizontally proportioned in a visually stunning way, the house has a flat slab of exposed concrete structured by pillars and supported by stone walls. Under this slab, a wooden box contains all the living spaces. Local stone was used for the walls and floor.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY

Milanofiori Residential Complex in Assago, Milan, by OBR with Buro Happold Ltd and Favero & Milan Ingegneria S.p.A. for Gruppo Cabassi

Judges’ Comments:

The Milanofiori housing complex at Assago, to the south of Milan,is part of the Milanofiori North mixed use development, a new gateway to the city. It has 107 apartments in a C-shaped complex. One façade facing the street has an urban feel with movable wooden screens; the other facing the inner park is terraced with double glazed facades enclosing bioclimatic greenhouses. The geometry of the building optimizes the solar passive design, and each apartment has an indoor-outdoor garden behind the glass. The judges felt that the treatment of the continuous, punctual facades and overall configuration was very well judged. This elegant solution embraces the classic integration of landscape and building, using the curved C shape wrapping the park to create a sense of community and place.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD

Diagonal ZeroZero Telefonica Tower, Barcelona, by Estudi Massip-Bosch for Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona

Judges’ Comments:

The Diagonal ZeroZero Telefonica Tower is a stunning office complex rising 100 metres. With its exceptional location at the entrance to Barcelona’s main thoroughfare of the Diagonal, this 21st century minaret is highly visible from the city and from the coast. Its sharp and stylised yet serene trapezoidal prism form has a modular curtain wall façade of thin white aluminium profiles like vertical wave forms. Low-iron, extra-transparent glass with patterned ceramic serigraphy reinforces the building’s slenderness, and contributes to solar diffusion and glare control. Inside this organic-looking building, three interrelated levels flow around a 40-metre high atrium following the slope of the adjacent Plaça Forum, creating direct visual and physical continuity with the city to help people enjoy its civic activities. Intended for 1,500 staff, it is topped by corporate space, and a two-floor auditorium split into an orchestra and two amphitheatres. A superb contribution to the city.

INTERNATIONAL INTERIOR DESIGN AWARD

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, by RHWL Architects for Manhattan Loft Corporation

Judges’ Comments:

The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel is an extensive and sensitive refurbishment of the Victorian Gothic and Grade 1-listed St Pancras Chambers designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It was originally opened in 1876 as a 244-room, five-star Marriott Renaissance Hotel and 66 luxury apartments.

The poet Sir John Betjeman called this Gothic treasure ‘too beautiful and too romantic to survive’ in a world of tower blocks. But it has: after years of sensitive restoration, half a century on from when efforts to rescue it began, this historic landmark is now reborn as the public face of the new St Pancras International Eurostar Terminal.

With Gothic Revival metalwork, gold leaf ceilings, hand-stencilled wall designs, the fantastic aura of the building has come back to life, through the efforts of what the judges recognise as a huge commitment by all concerned. In a very competitive category, it was a treat for us to choose this scheme rescuing a unique atmospheric design now hailed as one of London’s most romantic buildings. We hope it will encourage others to restore and renovate noteworthy existing urban fabric to avoid losing it forever.

International Interior Design Special Commendation

This year we also have a special commendation for one entry from the International Interior Design category.

University of Naples Subway Station, by Karim Rashid Inc for the Naples Municipality

Judges’ Comments:

The Naples line 1 University of Naples Metropolitan Subway station is a vibrant and playful concept complementing the multi-cultural community, very many of them involved with academia, travelling though it each day. Entering the station from the piazza the visitor walks through a space clad with tiles printed with new words invented in the 21st century. Back lit ceiling and lenticular wall patterns, sculptures, digital art – it’s all there aiding a sense of stimulating flow.

This metaphorical design signals the integral knowledge hub that Naples is emerging into being – just as the designers intend the sequence of imagery to match the shift to a focused mind state. The judges want to congratulate everyone involved for their courage and creativity in transforming a public transport infrastructure project into a positive, imaginatively unfolding yet wholly practical space alive with cultural significance about the present and the future of the city.

International Offsite Construction Project of the Year

London 2012 Olympic Stadium, by Populous for The Olympic Delivery Authority

Judges’ Comments:

The London Olympic Stadium is a structure that will be seen throughout the world during next summer’s Games. It is simple and to the point in appearance, designed to be the most sustainable stadium ever built. With steel as a resource in short supply, it was made 75% lighter in its use of the material than other stadia. It uses a low-carbon concrete made from industrial waste and contains 40% less embodied carbon than usual. The much discussed sustainable wrap in lightweight polyester is light and sustainable. None of this is any good if it doesn’t serve its purpose, and here the architects responded to the need to accommodate 80,000 people during the Games, 25,000 of the seats are permanent on the lower tier.

A temporary lightweight steel and concrete upper tier holding up to 55,000 spectators can be removed after the Games. It is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate many different requirements and capacities in the future, so it can be a first-rate venue for sports as well as cultural and community events and leave a lasting legacy. Congratulations to Populous for this world-beating project.

YOUNG ARCHITECT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Living Foz Apartment Building, Foz do Douro, Portugal, by dEMM arquitectura for J.Camilo, lda

Judges’ Comments:

With its breathtaking view of the sea and the mouth of the Douro River in Oporto, Portugal, the Living Foz is an apartment building with gardens designed with a new approach to high-quality residential buildings. 40 apartments distributed over 7 floors use 30% of the plot area leaving the rest for the collectively used garden.

The articulated angles of the balconies create spaces enriched by contrasts of light and shade, exposure and protection emphasised by the white cast-in-place concrete and dark glass reinforced concrete. The façade’s geometric and material principle continues through the external areas, creating landscaped areas for playing, strolling and relaxing. With controlled sun exposure, the thermal inertia of the façade, and use of alternative energy, Living Foz respects the individual and his habitat.

BEST STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF THE YEAR

The Crystal, Copenhagen, Denmark, by schmidt/hammer/lassen architects/ for Nykredit

Judges’ Comments:

The Crystal is an extension to the Danish mortgage bank Nykredit. It’s a new building sited on a plaza between the harbour front and the old part of Copenhagen, a new waterfront landmark harmonizing with its neighbouring buildings. Freestanding, it is a transparent, geometric, glazed form. Resting only on a single point and line, this light crystalline structure appears to float above the plaza, The multifaced glass façade reflects daylight and its integrated sun screen adapts to changing light conditions.

The Crystal has a rhombic construction system allowing the building to dispense with pillars, and is low-energy. The floor plan is a Z-shape around two atria, which ensures that all workstations are well-lit and enjoy good views out. We were excited by the bravura of the Crystal’s remarkable geometry, elegant interiors and flexibility within the 6 floors, and its fine contribution to the waterfront.

PUBLIC BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD

Due to an extremely high number of exceptional entries, this year we actually have 2 winners for this category. The judges were so torn between two projects that we felt we should honour both of them.

First winner:

Building of Control CCS, Ferrol, Spain, by Diaz & Diaz Arquitectos for Port Authority of Ferrol-San Ciprian

Judges’ Comments:

The Building of Control CCS is a landmark for the port of Ferrol in Spain – a beacon for arriving shipping. The aim was to create a unique intelligent building with presence, high construction quality and a simple design that is functionally long-lasting and low cost to maintain.

This has been achieved by making the four-floor building an energy-efficient container in which its spatially well arranged work areas can also be modified in relation to future needs. The building is conceived as diaphanous, clear and bright and affording excellent views out. The structure on pilotis seems to grow naturally as if extruded out of the harbour wall and is then wrapped by its elegantly designed double skin façade. CCS combines structural integrity with a deep sense of its purpose.

Second winner:

Cité de L’Océan et du Surf, Biarritz, France, by Steven Holl Architects for City of Biarritz

Judges’ Comments:

The Cité de l’Océan et du Surf Museum in Biarritz is an exploratory building focusing on oceanic issues, and the educational and scientific aspects of sea and surf. It is designed as a set of simple, low, geometric enclosures, for a permanent collection and exhibition areas with a rolling plaza. These evoke the mystery of the sea and by night glow like fragments, according to critic Yehuda Safran.

The project achieves a good, seamless connection with its coastal landscape. The judges liked the restrained palette of materials include raw white concrete used in this context, and the experiential nature of the sequence of spaces. It is very much a public building, with a restaurant, a surfers’ hangout, a skate pool and a public plaza. This is a poetic gestural design sitting between land and sea, and bringing together the best of both.

BEST SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY INCORPORATED INTO A BUILDING

Q1 Building, Thyssenkrupp Quarter, Essen, Germany, by JSWD ARCHITEKTEN with Chaix & Morel et Associés, for Thyssenkrupp AG, Essen

Judges’ Comments:

The Q1 Building in Essen, Germany, forms the heart of the new ThyssenKrupp Quarter on the site of the old cast steel production facility. Extending across 11 floors of flexible areas it is structured by intermediate levels and floating bridges. The windowpanes are supported by filigree cable constructions, so that the windows appear to be made from a single pane of glass.

This expressive symbol of sustainable development is as a result a completely distinctive corporate building for the global materials and technology group ThyssenKrupp. The innovative and efficient sun shading system for large parts of Q1’s façade has more than 3,000 metal feathers. These rotate to follow the position of the sun, avoiding overheating while still protecting views for the occupants from over-heating and it can direct natural light into the interior. Q1 is a masterly design for a workplace for 500 staff in this new urban quarter providing space for work, leisure and culture.

BEST SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN KEEPING WITH ITS ENVIRONMENT

EDF Archive Centre, Bure, France, by LAN for EDF

Judges’ Comments:

The EDF Archives building fully integrates into the landscape of Bure-Saudron in the rural heart of eastern France while meeting stringent environmental quality standards. This is a building that houses energy company EDF’s millions of documents on 70 kilometres of shelves.

With five levels and a total surface area of 7,000 square metres, heat loss and energy consumption are both low, thanks to a high-performing, cutting edge envelope that keeps the interior comfortable in the summer and reduces the need for cooling. The building appears lightweight and in movement, due to stainless steel studs in the earth-coloured concrete cladding. Trees planted around the buildings mirror the natural patterns of the surrounding countryside and there is a system of lagoons that recycle and reuse water.

EMIRATES GLASS LEAF AWARDS WINNER (OVERALL WINNER)

Judges’ Comments:

Picking an overall winner worthy of the Emirates Glass Leaf Award was not easy this year; in fact, we the judges asked for two extra weeks in which to assess and evaluate four of the category winners. After further debate, the Milanofiori Housing Complex by OBR Open Building Research was confirmed as the overall winner.

Urban housing remains the poor relation to other programmes, yet presents architects with their greatest challenge in finding a modern interpretation and synthesis. We feel that OBR’s Milanfiori Housing Complex is a truly progressive and holistic concept for its setting of the Milanofiori North scheme which asserts a strong identity, has a high environmental quality and avoids the dormitory town syndrome.

With its elegant overlap of different layers, OBR’s scheme interacts meaningfully with nature, and – something we regard as significant today – allows residents to personalise their landscape. OBR’s design reminds us that city living is wholly compatible with progressive design, bringing the advantages to city dwellers of the garden setting and the sense of being rooted in the neighbourhood.

We, the Leaf judges, also appreciate OBR’s effort to create a meaningful relationship with the overall masterplan for the mixed use district of Milanofiori North designed by Erick van Egeraat, matching its high standards and positive ideals. His plan defines a cluster of programmes whose elements appear to follow the characteristics of the surrounding landscape, creating a public park as an extension of the existing forest. Bravo once again to the Italian team!

The 2011 Emirates Glass LEAF Awards returns for its 9th annual year on 16th September honouring the architects designing the buildings and solutions that are setting the benchmark for the international architectural community.

The LEAF Awards will be celebrating the best that global architecture has to offer this year with strong competition from the likes of Populous who were the overall winner in 2010 for the monumental Soccer City National Stadium – “The Melting Pot” along with Boogertman + Partners.
