Architect Jørn Utzon‘s next major design – after returning to Denmark after Sydney – was the Bagsvaerd Church building in Copenhagen. The plain and rectilinear exterior contrasts with the sensuously curving soffits within – the interior creates a welcome surprise.

The German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. This building was used for the official opening of the German section of the exhibition. It is an important building in the history of 20th Century architecture, for many people their favourite modern building. It is known for its elegant pared-down form and its extravagant materials, such as marble, red onyx and travertine.

The structure is made both in concrete and steel. All the materials are natural and untreated for them to keep their original aspect. Concrete is used for the envelope and the floors; steel is used for the pillars and for the window frames ; and untreated exotic wood (iroko) is used for the external curtain.

The house rests on a hill that commands a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. Prior to the renovation a forest windbreak had obstructed the view of the sea from the house. Tadashi Suga Architects capitalized on the renovation oceanic view into the design.

To the north of King’s Cross and St Pancras International railway stations, 67-acres of derelict land are being transformed in what is one of Europe’s largest urban regeneration projects. The result will be a vibrant mixed-use quarter, at the physical and creative heart of which will be the new University of the Arts London campus, home of Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design.
