Grimshaw designed Stoke on Trent City Centre Bus Station to open
Design: Grimshaw
The Grimshaw designed Stoke on Trent City Centre Bus Station will officially open to the public on Tuesday 26th March 2013.
Stoke-on-Trent Bus Station Building Competition
Grimshaw’s design was unveiled in June 2010 as the winner of an international design competition run by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The project forms a significant step in the city’s redevelopment plan.
Situated on a prominent site on the boundary of the city centre alongside the ring road, the scheme offers spectacular distant views, whilst the character and landscape of its Hanley location has been a strong source of inspiration for the design.
The new bus station makes efficient use of its site for the movement of buses and people, and at the same time creates a significant new landmark with its sweeping roof.
The edge of the roof rises and falls to create a wave-like form that responds to the location of entrances and passenger facilities. A timber soffit helps to give a welcoming and warm environment for waiting passengers.
There is extensive use of Staffordshire blue brick which is organised into geometric patterns that twist, slip and shift against each other around the building’s perimeter. In combination with the Carlow limestone flooring, they represent the underlying coal seams and clay which drove Hanley’s industrial growth.
