The new museum building will occupy a two-acre, museum-owned site currently being used as a parking lot. The property is adjacent to the Isamu Noguchi-designed Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden and to the Glassell School of Art. It is across Bissonnet St from the Audrey Jones Beck Building, designed by architect Rafael Moneo, and the Caroline Wiess Law Building, designed by architect Mies van der Rohe. The new building will include the MFAH permanent collection, galleries for traveling exhibitions, educational facilities, a library and study/resource center, lecture halls, a theater and a restaurant. Three architecture offices – Steven Holl Architects, Snøhetta, and Morphosis – had been shortlisted for the work.

American University sports building
Its unusual boomerang-or link pin-exterior shape has been designed to maximize its tight site constraints, which results in dynamic residual spaces between its curvilinear shape, the existing stadium and Shoemaker Arena, as well as sports fields and the University Recreation Center. It also offers a spectacular view to and from the stadium.
