Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum in Okopy

Architecture of Memory by Nizio Design International

Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum in Okopy

September marks the 78th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. The Polish priest, whose unyielding stance against the communist regime made him a symbol of freedom and courage, continues to inspire new generations. In his native village of Okopy in Podlasie, a museum dedicated to his memory is being built. The entire architectural concept, building design, permanent exhibition, and interior arrangement are entrusted to Mirosław Nizio and his studio, Nizio Design International.

Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum in Okopy

Architecture rooted in spirituality of place

The project envisions the creation of a Museum–House of Memory, deeply embedded in the local landscape and regional symbolism. The 1,200 m² building draws inspiration from the architecture of Podlasie and Eastern Mazovia: rural cottages, roadside chapels, and Gothic churches with austere gables. It is a deliberate reference to the modesty, simplicity, and spirituality of the countryside where Father Jerzy grew up.

The contemporary, ascetic form of the museum will blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings of fields, meadows, and forests. The use of materials such as aggregate concrete, natural stone, and gravel evokes the character of traditional local buildings. As these materials slowly patinate over time, the structure will become an organic part of its environment. “We were inspired by modest stone and wooden chapels, but also by monumental Gothic temples where light breaks through darkness. We wanted the architecture to speak the language of truth and courage – the values that lay at the heart of Father Jerzy’s life,” emphasizes Mirosław Nizio.

Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum in Okopy

The heart of the museum

At the center of the concept lies the Place of Reflection, a distinct space covered with a gable roof, rising above the entire structure. The chapel’s façade, built of concrete blocks made from local aggregate, is shaped in a way that, through its apertures, creates a symbolic sign of the cross. Natural light filtering inside will endow the space with a spiritual dimension, while at night the emanating glow will turn the structure into a stone lantern.

Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum in Okopy

Symbolism of death and life

A symbolic dam, represented by a monumental concrete wall with flowing streams of water, will become an integral part of the architectural narrative. This element directly references the dam in Włocławek, the site of Father Popiełuszko’s martyrdom. Here, water symbolizes purification, life, and memory. The wall’s concrete blocks will also bear the names of priests persecuted during the communist era, forming a collective monument to the clergy of those oppressive times.

Interiors – spaces of memory and education

Daylight will filter inside through narrow slits, creating an atmosphere of contemplation. The functional program includes, among others, a reconstruction of the priest’s Warsaw apartment, permanent and temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, a library, a reading room, and a café annex. The narrative of the exhibition will guide visitors through Father Jerzy’s biography, his pastoral and social activity, the repression he suffered from the security services, culminating in his tragic death and enduring legacy.

Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum in Okopy

The Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Museum is designed to serve a dual role: as a site of remembrance and as a local center of activity. As a future branch of the Podlasie Museum in Białystok, it will collect and share archival materials, while also inspiring research, educational initiatives, and community engagement. The architecture thus responds not only to the need for commemoration but also to the fostering of social bonds on a local scale.
Construction of the museum began in July 2025. Its completion and official opening are scheduled for October 2027, marking the 43rd anniversary of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko’s death.
