Perched on the heights of Bormes-les-Mimosas with commanding views over the village and the Mediterranean Sea, Hôtel le Mirage commissioned Atelier du Pont to undertake the renovation and extension of the property. Conceived as a careful dialogue between landscape and architecture, the intervention seeks to reinforce the character of the existing hotel while responding sensitively to its exceptional setting.

“I was going to walk in the footsteps of my grandfather” – that was the motivation of the architect when he agreed to renovate this residence built by his grandfather, also an architect. And with a particularly emotional commitment, the grandson began a contemporary reinterpretation of the main residence, two generations apart.

The Wood House
Working within the shell of an existing flat, this project required a complete reconfiguration of the floorplan. With the original flat comprised of a 40m² bedroom and small kitchen, bathroom and living spaces, the design response by the architects studio was to create more proportionate rooms.

This new French property with its large north-facing garden, had very little natural light and the living space on the ground floor was segmented into too many sections with low ceilings. Load-bearing walls and partitions have been removed in order to create a homogeneous and airy place.

This large French farmhouse property is sited on a vast plot on the outskirts of a village. The residence had recently undergone a clumsy renovation, which deformed the classic farmhouse archetype and the owners did not feel at home.

For centuries, the enclosed courtyard has been overlaid on various geographic settings—each time transformed according to the climate, rituals, and construction practices of the place. A vehicle to capture the outdoors within the building, the courtyard is defined by its interiority.

In practice, the challenge was much more complicated: how to extend a large 19th century house without betraying its character or resorting to imitation or superficial stylistic effects?

Residence in Théoule sur Mer
The contract won by 4a Architekten from Stuttgart to redesign a villa with listed-building status in Théoule offers wonderful prospects. Built in 1926, the building is not only impressive because of its splendid location on the French Riviera, but is also something special with regard to its history: The Villa Le Trident is the first of numerous villas built and resided in by the American architect Barry Dierks on the coast of the Mediterranean.

The brief suggested the L-shaped general plan and the use of an indigenous stone for retaining walls. But it did not suggest half burying a series of interconnecting cave-like rooms, nor the five three-storey board-marked concrete towers that poke out of the rockery roof. This is where the genius of the architect comes in.

This residentce is called “The Residential of Roof”. It is composed of the entire roof from regulation inherited in this region traditionally that 40-degree slope of the roof and 7m height, in another house to make the inside of the roof, while protecting the traditional regulation of forms, tried to create another inside garden between the roof and house.

Lyon house
The DI-VA house, whose name is a play on the owners’ names, occupies a previously empty space in the residential Croix-Rousse district of Lyon. Given the narrowness of the frontage, and the fact that there is a building directly opposite, the architects decided to adopt a judo-type strategy. The house turns away from direct confrontation, and exploits chinks in the landscape in order to optimise the views and ambiances. Entirely prefabricated, it was constructed in less than a week.

The first glimpse at this house is a wall of cork which separates the site in two from a North-South diagonal creating a garden along the street for the entrance and a garden on the side of the valley protected from wind and from the sounds of the street.
