The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced the five finalists who will compete for the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. Stadshal Gent is one of the five nominated buildings. In total, 335 works in 37 European countries were nominated for the award.

Wintercircus Transformation
Architects Atelier Kempe Thill has won the invited international competition for the transformation of Wintercircus Mahy in Ghent. The building that served as a circus building until the early 20th century will be transformed into a meeting-point and hotspot for creation and innovation.

Sustainable social housing district Sint-Agatha-Berchem, sites ‘Termonde’ and ‘Gérance’.
These new social housing units are in addition to the social housing district built in 1922-1925 by architect Victor Bourgeois. One plot is located along the Beheersstraat and has 43 units, the other one is along the Dendermondestraat with 32 units.

Villa Roces is integrated in an oblong terrain of about 70m long and 30m wide, situated in the forest surroundings of Bruges. The concept consists of a 50 m long and a 4.20 m high wooden wall flanking 6 m wide glass box is disposed.

SADAR + VUGA in collaboration with LENS°ASS Architecten participated in an invited competition of the Vlaams Bauwmeester Open Call 21. The competition called for three new buildings on the Campus Schoonmeersen of the University College Ghent, a building for the Study of Social Work (SOAG), a Sports Hall Extension and lastly the Renovation of Building B and adjoining Student Plaza.

Sandworm
Sandworm is an organic structure/space/creature realized on the dunes of the Wenduine coastline, Belgium. The 45 meters long and 10 m wide and high installation moves freely in-between architecture and environmental art and is constructed entirely out of willow following the local knowledge of a continuing interaction between work and environment.

Hidden within a traditional block of houses, the new extension to the Museum of Photography in Charleroi takes roots in the orchard of a former Carmelite convent. The building is inside the enclosure of the convent, which hides a big garden which has several trees registered with the Heritage Inventory.

The two buildings are connected through several footbridges above the courtyard which is situated between two public spaces: the Cheval Noir street and the Brunfaut square. A new entrance was realized towards the square to affirm the crossing character of the parcel.

REX and Principal in Charge Joshua Prince-Ramus have been named the winner of the BibLLLiotheek competition to build a “Library of the Future” for the city of Kortrijk, Belgium. REX partnered with landscape architects Bureau Bas Smets in entering the competition, which included both a building and master plan.

The Maisin Centre is established on a small allotment, 15 metres in width, in the heart of the “quartier Léopold” in Brussels. Its conception is, in essence, a re-interpretation of the traditional patricianʼs lay-out with its characteristic passageway entrance open to pedestrians, encompassing some ten-odd meeting rooms and offices.

This house is located outside the small village of Mormont in the Ardenne forests of Belgium. Designed for a young family of four, this Belgian home will start as a summer house and expand into the lower floor to ultimately function as a permanent residence.

The entirety of these technical premises, from the –3 level all the way to the 5th level, is organised along a spinal column which runs along the rue Saint Pierre down to the cafeteria and meeting room, both situated on the 5th level, on par with the urban terrace. Concerning the specifics of the dressing rooms, there are 4 private and 5 shared dressing rooms, accommodating 32 artists.
