The Interior Renovation of Beijing Railway Station by WIT, Beijing, Northern China

Beijing Railway Station Interior Renovation
WIT Design & Research was responsible for the interior renovation of Beijing Railway Station. The scope of the project included the Central Hall, the Fourth Waiting Room, and the Central Waiting Room. The design tasks encompassed interior design, the reorganization of commercial and media areas, as well as lighting and the wayfinding system.

Beijing South Railway Station
The Ministry of Railways plans to spend 150bn RMB (1.2bn GBP) to build a number of new railway stations along a new high speed rail link between Beijing and Shanghai, with Beijing South as the flagship of a network of new stations and six massive hubs. Among the new stations currently under construction is New Guangzhou Station, another of Farrells’ projects, due for completion in 2009.

Work on Torino Porta Susa railway station, the first Italian station on the high speed Paris-Rome line, resumed at the end of 2009. The gateway into Italy from northern Europe, Torino Porta Susa is designed as an urban locus, an extension of the city’s existing Roman layout and public spaces, offering a wide range of transport and services.

Following their success in winning first prize in an international competition, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been commissioned to design the new southern railway station in Hangzhou. After the eastern and main railway stations it will be the third largest railway station of this metropolis.

The show-piece is clearly the Western Concourse – Europe’s largest single span station structure and the heart of the development, but the overall project is far more complex: an extraordinary, collaborative effort that has delivered an internationally significant transport interchange, fit for the 21st century and beyond.”

The architects have highlighted the bridge function between the city quarters with a 57 meter high and nearly 400 meter long barrel vault roof above the terminal concourse. Its curved roof is reminiscent of a large scale city gate and the long, stretched out concourse beneath of a classic place of transit.

The proposed buildings will transform the existing Brussels railway station into a symbolic destination in the capital city of both Belgium and the European Union. The distinctive v-shaped silhouette emerges from the elongated base generating a prominent urban landmark.

The city of Liège is now a major node in the European high-speed rail network. When the city’s existing railway station building had to be replaced, as unsuitable for the demands of high-speed rail travel, Euro Liège TGV issued a request for proposals from European architects.

Calatrava conceived the station as a link between two distinct areas of the city of Liège, which previously had been separated by the railroad tracks. On the north side of the site is a rundown urban area, laid out in a typical 19th century scheme.

This railway station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London. It was opened in 1874 as a replacement for the Great Eastern Railway’s main London terminus, Bishopsgate station, which was subsequently converted into a goods yard.
