Stazione Termini Roma
Main Railway Station Rome
Date built: 1950
Design: Leo Calini and Eugenio Montuori; Massimo Castellazzi, Vasco Fadigati, Achille Pintonello and Annibale Vitellozzi
The Railway Station building was designed by the two teams that won an architecture competition in 1947.
It was inaugurated in 1950.
Principal material: travertine & reinforced concrete.
Stazione Termini contains anodized aluminium friezes by artist Amerigo Tot.
Nicknamed ‘the Dinosaur’ due to double curve of the cantilever roof.
The Rome Railway Station has existed since 1862.
With 33 platforms and over 150 million passengers each year, Roma Termini is the second largest railway station in Europe after Paris Gare du Nord.
Termini is also the main hub for public transport inside Rome. Two Rome Metro lines (A and B) intersect at Termini metro station, and a major bus station is located at Piazza dei Cinquecento, the square in front of the station. However, the main tram lines of the city cross at Porta Maggiore, some 1,500 metres east of the station.
