Design: Arup / Grimshaw

Arup has won the task of designing a new HS2 terminus at Euston Station that is also hoped to trigger the regeneration of the area.

The £10m contract is the second to be awarded under HS2′s civil and structural design services framework. Arup will be supported by architects Grimshaw and contractor Costain which will plug in its logistics expertise.

The redevelopment will create a new terminus for HS2 and existing railway services plus a new London underground ticket office.

There will also be the opportunity for new public spaces and community facilities to be created above more spacious platforms and the streets surrounding the station will be easier to access.
The long-term vision of HS2 Ltd at this station is to provide the principal rail gateway for high speed rail services from London to the West Midlands, and onto the north-west and north-east of England and Scotland.

This work will form part of the hybrid bill documentation, to be deposited by the end of 2013.

The demolition of the old Euston Station building in 1962 was labelled “one of the greatest acts of Post-War architectural vandalism in Britain”, approved by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Many, including Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman, tried to save the building including the characterful Euston Arch. This campaign led to the formation of The Victorian Society and the modern conservation movement in England.
