The key point of reference for the new library design was its location in the valuable environment of the civic centre created by Aalto – a masterpiece of modern architecture. The aim was to initiate a dialogue between the new and the old part.

House in Karjaa
Apelle is a wooden one family house located in Karjaa – Finland. The building rests in a natural harbor like a boat in a sheltering pocket surrounded by bed rocks and trees. The interior space of Apelle is a continuous tube that grows gradually along the house and through the main opening and terrace into the forest.

Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos
The Sami Cultural Centre Sajos is located in northern part of Finnish Lapland, in village of Inari. Sajos is the centre of culture and administration for the Sami, the only indigenous people in EU. The building creates better possibilities for the Sami in Finland to preserve and develop their own language, culture and business.

Tampere Waterfront Buildings
BIG wins the competition to revitalize the city center of the third largest city in Finland.
The invited design contest calls for a strong architectural master plan, comprising residential, commercial and cultural programme, forming a new urban area around the existing Ratina sports stadium in one of the most rapidly developing regions in Finland. BIG is selected as a winner of the competition by Finnish developers Rakennustomisto Pohjola & YH-Länsi, among proposals from Swedish Wingårdhs, German Behnisch Partner and Finnish JKMM.

SAFA Architecture Competition – Otaniemi Central Campus
Aalto University Properties Ltd organised an open international competition for the design of the Otaniemi central campus area. The competition was divided into two phases.
This Finnish Architecture Competition can be entered by persons who have the right to practice architect’s profession in the country where they qualified or in the country where they practice the profession. The total prize sum was EUR 300,000.

Four-cornered villa
This building is a sustainable country cottage. The cross like shape of this simple villa reaches towards four very different views. The space is open and defined at the same time. The exterior is treated black and to contrast the interior is very light. The building is insulated well and heated by wood from own forest only.

Winner of the European Copper in Architecture Awards
This dedicated cemetery chapel aims to reconcile the emotional needs of mourners with the pragmatic demands of funerals. The building uses similar materials to the old structures in the area and the roof is patinated copper, like the roof of the old church.
