Key Residential Developments in Northeast Europe

Houses in Finland
We’ve selected what we feel are the key examples of Finnish Houses. We aim to include buildings that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.
We cover completed residential buildings, new home designs, architectural exhibitions and architecture competitions across Finland. The focus is on contemporary Finnish properties but information on traditional homes is also welcome.

House in Karjaa
Apelle is a wooden one family house located in Karjaa – Finland. The building rests in a natural harbor like a boat in a sheltering pocket surrounded by bed rocks and trees. The interior space of Apelle is a continuous tube that grows gradually along the house and through the main opening and terrace into the forest. Along this axis the collective and private actions are tuned according to the times, functions and needs of the day and night.
Four-cornered villa, Virrat, central Finland
Design: Avanto Architects

Four-cornered villa
This building is a sustainable country cottage. The cross like shape of this simple villa reaches towards four very different views. The space is open and defined at the same time. The exterior is treated black and to contrast the interior is very light. The building is insulated well and heated by wood from own forest only. There is only solar electricity and no running water. Vegetables are grown on own land and the lake surrounding the island is famous as a good fishing spot. The simple and ascetic life at the countryside differs dramatically from the hectic city life.
