UNESCO Names Alvar Aalto’s Unique Sunila Residential Area in Finland a World Heritage Site

The Sunila residential area in Kotka, designed by Alvar Aalto, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a part of the 13 landmark list. Sunila is one of the most extensive projects of architect Alvar Aalto’s career. The area combines Aalto’s architecture, the history of the forest industry and Finnish working life, and a close connection to nature.

Sunila is also an important part of the national and international story of the birth of the Finnish welfare state. Built on the shore of the Gulf of Finland at the mouth of the Kymi River as housing for pulp mill workers, Sunila was a revolutionary example of modern, nature-oriented living in its time.

“The Sunila mill area and residential district together form Alvar Aalto’s largest realized work and Finland’s first forest suburb. This is not just a single building, but an outstanding overall ensemble. The district also served as a model for many other residential areas. Even after nearly 90 years, Sunila remains a vibrant neighborhood,” says Anne Stocker, Chair of the Pro Sunila Association.

The first buildings in Sunila were completed in 1937. Today, the area is home to 1100 residents including Finland’s number one hammer thrower Krista Tervo and Japanese footballer Atomu Tanaka.

Stay Overnight in an Aalto Masterpiece

The Sunila residential area includes 12 row houses and apartment buildings, the mill manager’s residence Kantola with its seaside saunas, and several architecturally distinctive service buildings.

Visitors can experience the Aaltos’ architecture firsthand and enjoy the original setting by staying in apartments furnished according to the design principles of Aino and Alvar Aalto. Kantola is open to the public during the summer and can also be rented for private events, meetings, training sessions, and other occasions.

Modern architecture applied to everyday life

Unlike many architectural landmarks that focus on public buildings, Sunila demonstrates how modern architecture was applied to everyday life. Designed as a complete living environment for workers of a pulp mill, Sunila combined architecture, nature and social wellbeing in ways that were decades ahead of its time.

For international travellers, Sunila offers a compelling extension to the Aalto experience available in Helsinki. Five sites included in the UNESCO-listed Aalto Works ensemble are located in the Finnish capital: Finlandia Hall, the House of Culture, the Social Insurance Institution Headquarters, Alvar Aalto’s Home and Studio.

Just 130 kilometres east of Helsinki, Kotka’s Sunila district allows visitors to experience Aalto’s architecture on an entirely different scale: not as individual landmark buildings, but as a complete residential community still lived in today.

Sunila Aalto Homes Invites Visitors to Explore the World Heritage Site on 29–30 August

Those interested in architecture, design, and the work of Alvar Aalto will have a unique opportunity to explore the newly designated World Heritage Site in greater depth during the last weekend of August.

At the Sunila Aalto Homes event, held on 29–30 August from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sunila residents will open their homes to visitors. The program will also include lectures, discussions, flea markets, and workshops for architecture and design enthusiasts.

The event offers a rare opportunity to see what it is like to live in a residential environment designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto, and how a forest suburb planned nearly 90 years ago continues to function as a living home and community.

Finland’s Eighth World Heritage Site

Sunila has been added to the World Heritage List as part of the Aalto Works collection, which consists of 13 buildings and sites representing modern architecture designed by Alvar, Aino, and Elissa Aalto across Finland. Anne Stocker of Pro Sunila welcomes UNESCO’s decision:
