Finnish Museum of History and the Future in Turku
The City of Turku in southwest Finland has launched an international architecture competition to select an ambitious design for the world’s first Museum of History and the Future. The new museum will combine high-quality architecture with purposefully designed interiors and landscape architecture. The winning entry will be required to balance aesthetic, functional, innovative solutions as well as sustainability, while considering the unique history and environment of the museum’s location.
The museum’s location is significant not just for its prime position on the city’s waterfront, but for the city’s history. It will sit in Linnanniemi, a former port area which will undergo regeneration – the museum being the flagship project, and will enjoy close links to the Turku Castle, the river Aura and the Baltic Sea. It will be one of the first new buildings in Linnanniemi, making it a new landmark for the whole Turku region.
Turku is Finland’s oldest city and is gearing up to its 800-year anniversary in 2029. The museum project is building on Turku’s strong cultural heritage and the city’s commitment to health and wellbeing. Recent new cultural investment projects include Turku’s Art House, which was opened in 2022, and a new concert hall, the Music Hall Fuuga, which is scheduled to start construction in October 2023.
The new museum should be designed and operated to be climate resilient in line with the city’s ambitious climate and energy action plan. This strategy will lead Turku to become net zero by 2029 and carbon negative in the 2030s and sets out practical steps to achieve this target, for example making energy efficiency one of the decisive criteria in the development of new properties.
The three best proposals will be recognised by a jury of city leaders and trustees, as well as experts appointed by the Finnish Architects’ Association SAFA. A maximum of 175,000 euros will be awarded for the competition, with the winner to receive a prize of 70,000 euros. Construction start is scheduled for 2027. The completion of the building is expected in 2029, and the opening of the museum to the public in 2030.
The architecture competition for the Museum of History and the Future launched on 4th September 2023, and proposals can be submitted until 16th January 2024. An open competition seminar will be held in Turku Castle’s Bryggman Hall on 28th September 2023. The seminar will also be livestreamed online. The seminar will be followed by a tour of the competition area. Further information can be found at Turku Architecture Competition
Minna Arve, Mayor of the City of Turku and Chair of the architecture competition jury, said:
”In recent years, the City of Turku has made significant strategic investments in culture to strengthen its identity as a European city of culture and an attractive tourist destination. The Art House Turku and Music Hall Fuuga complement the existing art and culture already located along the river Aura. The Museum of History and the Future continues the series of major cultural investments and will enhance the experience of the city for residents and visitors.”
Ville-Matti Rautjoki, Project Manager of the Museum of History and the Future, said:
“The location of the competition area in the immediate vicinity of the sea and the river, next to medieval Turku Castle, will certainly interest design professionals. We are expecting high-level proposals for the competition and have already received interest from international design agencies.”
