The concert hall incorporates a range of acoustic features designed to control reverberation time and regulate the direction and intensity of sound throughout the space. A retractable screen within the orchestral shell reflects sound towards the audience, while rotating triangular panels above the stage can reflect, absorb, scatter or redirect sound as required. Beneath the orchestra, wooden panels mounted on a steel framework function as resonators, responding to and reinforcing the sounds produced by the musicians’ instruments. Together, these adjustable elements create a flexible acoustic environment tailored to the demands of different musical performances.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and was started back in 1987, completing around 2004. The concert hall building is a key part of the cultural hub in downtown L.A.

The project will make this much-loved concert hall building more flexible, accessible, attractive and sustainable, providing greater audience comfort and improved facilities for performers.

An unusual conversion iof an existing building: the architects suggested maintaining the patio and some significant fragments of the structure, including that of the concert hall – an identity-shaping element of the old building. Highly prominent on the facade, this prow-like form once contained the audience seating. Today it houses a 150-strong cabaret-style space (the Club), while the Grand Hall for a standing audience of 650 is placed right behind it, with rehearsal rooms tucked below the Grand Hall.

This new American concert hall building was created with the total audience experience very much at the forefront. Its seats are arranged in a “vineyard” format, with seating sections ringing the stage and beginning on the same level as the performance platform.

In the great English tradition of distrust of the new followed by rapid assimilation into permanency and subsequent listing, Garsington’s design concept is driven by the need for it to be a completely demountable ‘temporary’ structure. Although it is supposed to be taken down every autumn, the landowner likes it so much he already suggested leaving it in place after the first season.

This is a modern building with premises covering 42,000 square metres. It is situated at the heart of the new area of urban development in Plaça de les Glòries, where the city’s three widest and longest avenues (Diagonal, Gran Via and Meridiana) converge.

La Philharmonie Luxembourg is located on the Kirchberg plateau, right at the center of a triangular site surrounded with offices and European administration buildings. Filtering light, a vast peristyle composed of 827 columns constitutes the foyer all around the Grand Auditorium.

The structure is designed to accommodate 6,000 spectators comfortably with configurations for as few as 600 or as many 8,000. Instead of a proscenium, Bernard Tschumi conceived of a stage free of all structural members, with a performance space approximately 260 feet wide by 130 feet deep.

The Norwegian city of Molde has just 25,000 inhabitants, but every July the biggest stars of jazz and about 100,000 jazz enthusiasts flock to the town’s world famous international jazz festival. In designing the city’s new cultural center, the challenge faced by 3XN was to create a building that was flexible and robust enough to provide a framework for cultural life on both scales.
