In the great English tradition of distrust of the new followed by rapid assimilation into permanency and subsequent listing, Garsington’s design concept is driven by the need for it to be a completely demountable ‘temporary’ structure.

Although it is supposed to be taken down every autumn, the landowner likes it so much he already suggested leaving it in place after the first season.

Nonetheless, it is entirely designed out of transportable elements which require one cherry picker to lift into place in a short space of time. 5-part galvanised steel truss components bolt together to form the 20 metre clear roof spans over the auditorium.

Transparent sail fabric and timber panels form the enclosure. The ‘foyer’ is open to the adjoining lake with timber and steel scaffolding stairs leading to the upper parts of the 600 seat auditorium.
