BDP TO DEVELOP DESIGN PROPOSALS FOR ABERDEEN’S ICONIC MUSIC HALL
BDP was chosen from a shortlist of five architectural practices by Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) to develop design proposals for this Category A-listed building. Aberdeen Music Hall interior:
The project will make this much-loved concert hall more flexible, accessible, attractive and sustainable, providing greater audience comfort and improved facilities for performers.
The improved Music Hall will include a new-look auditorium, a 100-seat performance space and a new cafe and bar.
The revitalised Music Hall will play an important role in Aberdeen’s vision to be a vibrant, creative and ambitious city with a strong cultural identity, a centre of artistic excellence and a cultural tourism destination.
BDP was selected for its track record in multi-award-winning arts projects such as the transformation of the A-listed Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow and the acclaimed Perth Concert Hall.
APA Board chairman Graeme Roberts stated that they “were impressed by the approach presented by the BDP team which blended the restoration and conservation of the historic fabric of the building with innovative design-led solutions to improving the customer experience.

BDP Architect Director Bruce Kennedy said: “The transformation of this wonderful ‘sleeping beauty’ of a building into a truly great and popular cultural, civic and community asset, must be a key element in supporting city centre regeneration and APA’s vision for the future.” Aberdeen Lord Provost George Adam added: “I am certain that an architectural practice with such an impressive track record will come up with innovative ideas to breathe new life into one of Union Street’s most impressive buildings.”
