The Client’s brief was for their weekend and holiday house, a compact 1960’s bungalow, to be enlarged, giving more living accommodation and enhancing the views of the sea to the north and west. Maintaining the private/secret nature of the site was also a requirement.

Orchard House was commissioned as a place in which to live, work and pursue various hobbies. The Client specifically wanted to create a lasting piece of responsive architecture that was not defined by her use of a wheelchair and where the building interacted effortlessly with the landscape.

This latest creation by AR Design Studio, is a stunning five bedroom house. Bordered by mature trees and a small lake, this spectacular house creates feelings of ultimate relaxation and privacy, whilst its contemporary design juxtaposes superbly with its beautifully rural location, on the south coast of England.

The Hurst House is a new build one-off contemporary house located on the edge of the village of Bourne End. The clients’ brief was to build a very sustainable and contemporary family home that would have the flexibility to successfully cope with changing family conditions as their children grow up and leave the nest. This lead to a house where they can live in one extended space while family bedrooms can be shut down and left on tick-over.

The clients’ brief is for a country house – ‘a dream in a wood’, a peaceful place to relax, regenerate, and think of new ideas. The existing site with the pool, its ruins and low walls has a very strong presence, and we wanted to keep this as an important part of the site.

The architects have overcome the reticence of planners, who insisted on this New Forest house being invisible from the public realm, in a thoroughly elegant way. Its concept is beautifully simple: a single long, linear shape with a central living space which is open to both ends.

Balancing Barn, Suffolk, south east England

This cantilevered holiday home near the village of Thorington in Suffolk, England, is 30 meters long, with a 15 meters cantilever over a slope, plunging the house headlong into nature. Living Architecture, an organization devoted to the experience of modern architecture, commissioned MVRDV in 2008.

Dingleton Boiler House, Scotland
Studio DuB has won Planning Permission and Listed Building consent to convert a derelict boiler house in the Scottish Borders into five apartments. The boiler house, by architect Peter Womersley, was completed in 1978 to serve a now defunct psychiatric hospital.

In the £200k project, the respected Brighton firm of architects has designed a two bedroom timber framed house that exceeds the Building Research Establishment (BRE) ‘excellent’ rating in energy saving and carbon reduction. In view of its exemplary ‘green’ features, the house has already won a ‘Green Apple Silver Award’ in the ‘National New Build Residential’ category, June 2007.

The narrow house occupies a 2.3m wide former side alley and rear garden of an adjoining house. The project utilises passive solar design, high levels of insulation, a ground coupled heat pump, and rainwater harvesting to reduce its impact on the environment and meets Code For Sustainable Homes Level 4.

The history of the existing house is one of expedience. Speculatively built by 19th Century developers, it has been adapted and distorted over time to suit circumstance – acquiring a single storey shop and basement, an extra storey, a cantilevered lavatory and a garage.

This radical new build 706 sqm house for a private family client in a St Johns Wood conservation area has been completed. The house replaces two former dwellings separated by a vacant plot which together occupied part of a triangular site to the north side of Abercorn Close.

North House is a substantial detached family home in a street of impressive Victorian villas and is an example of how an uncompromisingly contemporary house can sit comfortably and calmly in a conservation area and its existence is due to a sympathetic planning officer who recognized on appeal the sensitivity of the composition.

David Chipperfield Architects’ Private House in Oxfordshire has been granted planning permission by Cherwell District Council under the PPS7 Planning Policy for country houses. Situated on the edge of a spectacular natural escarpment on green belt land, this new 2,000 m2 farmhouse for a young family of eight will overlook Otmoor to the northwest.

Planning permission has been granted by the Lake District National Park Authority to build a house for two artists on the shores of Lake Windermere. This property is approached through an established coppice wood where the rising route both inside and outside of the shack culminates in spectacular elevated views over the Lake.
