Dorset Eco Home | New Build Sustainable Family Residence, England
This contemporary new-build family home in rural Dorset was shaped by its riverside context and ecological ambitions. Set between a lake and a river, the design sought to harmonise modern living with the natural landscape; drawing out views, natural light, and passive environmental performance.
The site offered both opportunity and sensitivity. Bordered by mature greenery and opening out onto a slow-moving river on one side, and an ecologically protected lake on the other. The brief was to design a home that felt grounded in place, that brought the outside in, and promoted a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle for its occupants.
Passive House principles underpinned the design from the outset. The architectural form was modelled to track the sun, allowing for carefully placed openings that harness solar gain in winter while generous overhangs shield internal spaces from summer heat. A high-performance fabric ensures minimal heat loss and consistent indoor comfort across all seasons. Whilst PV panels across the roof reduce the reliance on the grid.
The proposal utilises a minimal yet refined material palette of render, timber and zinc. This deliberate selection breaks down the building form visually, helping it to sit with greater sensitivity within the surrounding area. Grey render provides cohesion with neighbouring developments, while burnt timber introduces a layer of depth and warmth, complementing the render and adding a tactile, high-quality finish. Zinc is used sparingly to align with other local schemes, introducing a contemporary accent that remains understated.
Internally, the layout moves between openness and retreat. Social spaces are aligned to enjoy lake views and daylight, while quieter rooms are deliberately placed to offer privacy and stillness over the river. This interplay fosters a balanced lifestyle – one that supports connection and reflection in equal measure.
The design process began with a deep understanding of the site’s orientation, topography and prevailing conditions. Every decision, from window placement to wall depth, was made to enhance energy efficiency and encourage natural ventilation.
The result is a home that is both refined and responsive: low energy in operation, low maintenance by design, and rich in spatial experience. Footprint Architects have created a lasting family dwelling that champions modern sustainability while remaining rooted in its place and purpose.
