The Lake Michigan Getaway on Bridgeman waterfront lakehouse is a secluded getaway, nestled in nature with lush woods on all sides, but still open to the beach and Lake Michigan to the west. It was originally a three-season cottage but with an extensive remodel and addition, it’s now a year-round vacation home for the homeowners as a respite from city life.

Directed to create “a sustainable retreat that reflects the timeless beauty and simple comforts of the area,” the architects responded by raising the primary living space above the dense surrounding woods in order to gain light, air and views of Glen Lake and Lake Michigan beyond. The central idea is to sandwich a 1400 sqft three-story plywood box between two metal-clad walls: this plywood box is then suspended a full story above ground level.

Flat Lot Competition – Michigan Architecture Competition, Flint

Two Islands, a team of architects and designers based in London, have won the $25,000 grand prize in the inaugural Flat Lot Competition to design and build a temporary summer pavilion on Flint’s central downtown parking lot. The project opens June 14 for Flint Art Walk and will remain on the site until fall.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Zaha Hadid, the 46,000 sqft Broad Art Museum at MSU features a striking façade of pleated stainless steel and glass, distinguishing the building from MSU’s traditional Collegiate Gothic north campus. The museum will present contemporary art within a historical context through its study collection of more than 7,500 objects, ranging from the Greek and Roman periods to modern art. The building features galleries for special exhibitions, modern and contemporary art, new media, photography and works on paper.
