Quite early in the assessment process, from a field of 240 commendable entries, each the result of professional passion, a single project emerged from the crowd to announce itself with a clear voice above all others. Subsequently, throughout a rigorous process, that project remained to become a unanimous, clear leader and as fresh as the new day.

The relationship between spaces is ordered around the contention that the covered outside deck is the primary space. The covered deck is flanked by a sun trapped court and the kitchen and dining space. To ensure the usability of the covered deck it is enclosed on two sides with the third accessorised with sliding shutters to screen the wind. An outdoor fireplace generates the required heating and ambience and acts as the heart of the bach.

This waterfront project combines elegance, luxury and sophistication in a beach front property located along one of the pristine beaches of Cape Town. The Client’s brief was to renovate a ground floor double level apartment in a newly constructed luxury complex. The design of the original unit felt constricted and the Client wanted to add a fourth master bedroom suite.

Capitol Hill Residence, Seattle, Washington, USA – 27 May 2013

With a compact form and several integrated sustainable systems, this residence achieves the client’s goals to maximize the site’s views and resources while responding to its microclimate. The roof rainwater collects into a steel entry water feature, day light penetrates deep into the house through a central translucent slot, and exterior mounted mechanical shades can prevent excessive heat gain.

On a 12 meters by 13 meters (39ft by 42ft) plot of land, a monolithic volume is transformed in order to attain luminous indoor spaces. Slade stone at the exterior facades is contrasted with the soft beech wood finish, achieving great definition and special discovery. Built in a small plot of land 176 m2, (1894 SqFt), the construction rises looking south to the vertical vegetation garden wall. It is a 3 stories high assembly where the main terrace is to be found at the second level, follow by a small lecture studio.

The house has been built in a suburban neighbourhood and has been thought for someone who will live there permanently and whose children, friends and couple will visit them from time to time.

Contemporary House in Johannesburg , South Africa – 15 Apr 2013

Another luxury contemporary South African house by this architecture practice: as a result of an impeccable renovation, the house is divided into public and private spaces. To enter the private areas of the home, one must cross a bridge above a new internal water feature which breaks the public and private spaces, separating the entrance hall and study from the private home.

19 Nov 2012 – Another modern white coloured residence looking out over the sea, but this residence doesn’t follow the normal rules. There is a curious schism in the middle of the property (see the photo above) between hovering volume and terraced outdoor space. Also the proportions are highly unusual, with the ‘observatory rectangle’ looking out over the Mediterranean giving the feeling of being rather squashed.

Based on the architects’ experience for their own house, they applied the same strategy: a universal scheme that can work for any site condition, a house whose spatial limits will be the two mountains that dominate the valley, the abstract glass house as a starting point. But they were also convinced that the universal and abstract need to become specific in order to work, specific to topography, weather, use, etc. but there is one aspect that makes architecture specific that interests the architects above all: construction and materiality.

A house made for the granddaughter of great architect Sergio Bernardes and a Colombian artist was a challenge. At first they wanted the house to have caracteristics of Casa Lota made by his grandfather in 1950, from which we kept some materials such as the ceiling. The development of the project was very interactive.

This building is a weekend home in Brazil. Two voids puncture the roof at either end of the structure, washing the interior surface of the stone bearing walls with light and creating a stark contrast between the weight of the structure and lightness of the roof and floor which float above the rough ground.

Contemporary House in Zapallar, Chile – added 25 Mar 2013

The main strategy was to create a big terrace, creating this “new floor” that would allow the “leisure life” and make even more perceptible the Ocean sight, Offering a unique relationship between the inhabitant and the horizon line, the same way as the cliffs do. The terrace extends towards the Ocean, removing the view of the existing houses. The program decomposes into “two units”. This allows to get in touch with the ground in the proper way, and provides the architectonical support for the terrace.
