Grand Prix of the European Heritage Awards 2010 presented to the Neues Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island
David Chipperfield Architects’ Neues Museum in Berlin received the Grand Prix of the European Heritage Award 2010.
“The Awards programme highlights Europe’s best achievements, showcasing remarkable efforts made in safeguarding Europe’s rich architectural, landscape, archaeological and artistic heritage. The Award celebrates outstanding initiatives, conservation projects, research and educational success within the heritage sector, and rewards those exceptionally dedicated to its conservation.“ Europa Nostra.
In naming David Chipperfield Architects a Grand Prix Laureate, the committee wrote: “The Jury was most impressed with the rebirth of the Neues Museum, situated in the centre of Berlin’s Museum Island, which secured and restored the historic structures of the ruin, and connected them to the surrounding museums. The project was conducted with great elegance and efficiency, resulting in an outstanding and exciting example of a sensitive incorporation of groundbreaking contemporary Berlin architecture into the minimal-reconstruction of the original structure.”
The 2010 winners were selected from 139 submitted building projects from 26 countries. The European Commission and Europa Nostra announced this year’s six Grand Prix winners of the European Heritage Awards on 10 June 2010 during the Europa Nostra Annual Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.

Awards for Neues Museum
The Wolf Foundation, Israel, awarded the 2010 Wolf Foundation Prize in the Arts (Architecture) to architect David Chipperfield, praising his work on the Neues Museum in Berlin; this Berlin building project has also received the BDA (Association of German Architects) ‘Grosse Nike’ overall award for ‘remarkable achievement in terms of architecture and use of urban space’.
The Wolf Foundation lauded David Chipperfield as an ‘extraordinary architect, who has brought great refinement and quality to a contemporary interpretation of classical architecture, as a profound principle, rather than simply as an image.’ The President of the State of Israel presented the prize jointly to David Chipperfield and Peter Eisenman in a ceremony on 13 May 2010.
The BDA Nike awards for the Neues Museum in Berlin for the ‘perfection in detail’ category and the ‘Grosse Nike’ overall award were presented in Germany on 8 May 2010.

Neues Museum Berlin Reopening
In the presence of the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Neues Museum in Berlin will be officially reopened on the 16 October 2009. From 17 October, this major Berlin building will be accessible to the public for the first time in 70 years.
Built between 1841 and 1859 by the architect Friedrich August Stüler, extensive bombing of Berlin during the Second World War left the building in ruins, with entire sections missing completely and others severely damaged. Few attempts at repair were made after the war, and the structure was left exposed to the elements. In 1997, David Chipperfield Architects – with conservation specialist Julian Harrap – won the international competition for the rebuilding of the Neues Museum in Berlin.
Following the design phase, construction started in 2003. In the months after the official building handover on 5 March 2009, the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, the Museum of Pre- and Early History as well as some objects of the Collection of Antiques were installed. Together with the famous bust of Nerfertiti in the North Dome room, the Neues Museum will display almost 9,000 objects over approximately 8,000m².
The Neues Museum is one of five projects to have received the BDA Preis Berlin 2009.

Neues Museum Berlin – Royal Visit
On 30 April, as part of an official visit to Germany, Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will visit the Neues Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island, rebuilt by David Chipperfield Architects.
After more than ten years of intensive work, the completion of the rebuilt Neues Museum was celebrated in an official ceremony on 5 March 2009. During the public open days from 6 to 8 March, over 35,000 people visited the building. The national and international press coverage was hugely positive and enthusiastic.
In October 2009, after more than 60 years in ruin, the Neues Museum will reopen to the public as the third restored building on Museum Island, exhibiting the collections of the Egyptian Museum and the Museum of Pre- and Early History.
By visiting the Neues Museum, Their Royal Highnesses recognise the good relations between Germany and Great Britain. Their stay in Berlin is part of a five-day trip. Her Majesty The Queen visited the Neues Museum Berlin in 2004 to honour David Chipperfield as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
