BDP’s design proposals for the £83m Pavilions Arena redevelopment have been approved by Plymouth City Council, paving the way for a planning application to be made by Akkeron Leisure, the appointed preferred developer.

BDP’s scheme for the Pavilions site provides an extended and refurbished arena and also re-structures the site to provide a gateway from the city centre into the Millbay and Stonehouse areas of Plymouth via a new boulevard running to the north of the site.

The large-scale redevelopment of the remaining Pavilions site provides a leisure-led mixed-use development and includes a new 4* hotel, a four-screen, arts cinema, as well as student accommodation, a medium-sized food store and further retail and cafe outlets. These elements are linked by areas of high quality public realm which reinforce existing pedestrian links to the surrounding city.

As part of the Akkeron bid, BDP has also designed proposals for a new full-sized 1,500 seat ice arena, to replace a smaller one which currently exists on the Pavilions site. The new ice centre will become part of a new development at Home Park, the home of Plymouth Argyle FC. The development will also include a new south stand to the football stadium as well as hospitality and player facilities. A new hotel and multi-screen cinema complete the new development.

BDP is appointed as architect on the project which is expected to create 1,500 construction jobs over a five year period.
