University of Plymouth’s New Engineering & Design Facility

Multi-disciplinary design team sought.

RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the launch of a ‘Competitive Dialogue’ process on behalf of the University of Plymouth. The University is seeking to procure multi-disciplinary design services for a New Engineering & Design Facility (NEDF) on its main city centre campus. As well as accommodating the School of Engineering, the NEDF building will provide additional space for the School of Art, Design and Architecture. The facility is intended to further enhance the University’s ability to lead and innovate, particularly within the fields of digital fabrication and rapid prototyping, as well as fostering links between University activities and the business community.

The anticipated project scope involves re-provision and relocation of the School of Engineering’s current functions within a dedicated new-build component of c.3,140m2 with associated refurbishment of the 1970s Babbage Building. This latter element will provide a defined area of dedicated space for the functions relocated within it, together with refreshing remaining spaces and addressing identified maintenance issues.

The anticipated net area for the combined new build and refurbishment components is 10,650m2. Given its prominent location on the western edge of the campus, the NEDF will need to provide a successful insertion within the wider city landscape and be an exemplar of a low energy-use building.

It is anticipated that between three and five bid teams will be shortlisted and invited to participate in the dialogue phase, which will include design approach workshop sessions leading to the submission of final tenders in early October 2019.

On announcing the launch of the Competition, Mr Trevor Wills, Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Plymouth commented: “The new Engineering and Design Facility is part of our long-term vision to create a sustainable campus that both educates and inspires. It will offer a state-of-the-art setting for the engineers and designers of tomorrow, giving us the ultimate place to bring together students, academics and industry in an environment that not only benefits them but also society as a whole.”

A Memorandum of Information, Selection Questionnaire and other supporting information is available from the University of Plymouth’s digital tendering portal
https://in-tendhost.co.uk/plymouthuni/aspx/Home. The Memorandum of Information provides further details about the project scope for the New Engineering & Design Facility, the procurement process and programme. The deadline for submission of SQ returns is 12.00hrs (BST) on 30 July 2019.
