Chicago Architects Offices

This page contains a selection of major Chicago architects firms, with links to individual practice pages. We select the key Chicago Architects, but additions are always welcome. The focus is on contemporary architects in Chicago but information on traditional architecture studios is a lso welcome.

The most celebrated Chicago architect from the past is Mies van der Rohe, Architect. He was born in Aachen, Germany, but moved to the US at the time of the Second World War. A few of this buildings in the city are world-famous, notably Crown Hall at IIT, the IIT Masterplan, and the Lake Shore Drive apartments.

Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root (Burnham and Root) deserve a mention as they placed the city firmly on the world map with their early skyscraper designs.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed many key buildings early in his career in Chicago, although his architecture studio was later based in Taliesin West.

Bruce Graham and Walter Netsch of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill were celebrated skyscraper building designers in the latter part of the 20th Century.

Currently the most notable architecture practice are Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, Goettsch Partners, Jahn and Perkins+Will Architects – all with international work.
