“Chakra House” is a home on the western edge of Boulder, Colorado, USA, built in a western variation of Japanese vernacular style. Built c. 1978 for Chögyam Trungpa – a Tibetan Buddhist meditation master. Trungpa’s presence in Boulder, and the establishment there of the ‘international headquarters’ of his institution, had a great impact on the mythology and reputation of Boulder in the national (and perhaps world) consciousness.

Located at 7,300 feet, high above the city of Boulder, Colorado, the Sunshine Canyon Residence accentuates its dramatic site by juxtaposing a simple form with the steep contours of a landscape scarred by wildfire. The house floats above the harsh terrain to provide spectacular views of Sunshine Canyon to the south, Sugarloaf Mountain to the west, and the Flatirons to the east.

The A-Frame Club is a new hotel brand that takes design cues from 1970s American ski culture and the iconic A-frame cabins of that era. The first Club consists of 31 newly-constructed cabins along with a bar and restaurant in a historic saloon building in Winter Park, Colorado.

The client for the Pinnacle Court project, a sculpture artist, and his wife came to J.P.A. only wanting a studio next to their home. During the design process it grew to having a living space above the studio, which grew to having a small house attached to the studio forming a compound. At this point it became clear to the client; the project was outgrowing the neighborhood.

Aerosmith had not seen this house when they wrote the song “Livin’ on the Edge” in the 1970s since it was built in 2000, but if they had, it would have taken their inspiration to whole new levels. Unique in its design and definitely unique in its location, it would have won more than a Grammy or Viewers’ Choice award.

Carved into a vertical wall of Aspen trees, rock cliffs, and wandering creeks, on a 3.4-acre lot adjacent to majestic Bridal Falls, the house consists of three cascading glass boxes with a combined floor area of approximately 7,000 sqft.
