The clients (a middle-aged couple) requested a remodel of their back yard to align the space with their newly remodeled home. They weren’t sure exactly what the space needed but they knew it felt drab and dated. The wife was born and raised in England and thus was hoping for a greener and more colorful garden than is typical for our area.

McCall’s Magazine ‘Certified’ home, Piestewa Peak

McCalls Home Renovation, Piestewa Peak Arizona
This 1963 midcentury home near Piestewa Peak was originally designed by Architect Fredrick Fleener as a McCall’s Magazine ‘Certified’ home. The original architect worked with 21 women to design a home for the modern 1960’s family. Over the years the home changed hands several times and the original materials and details had been obscured and altered.

Located in the Uptown area of Phoenix, the 2 Barns residence is designed as a modern interpretation of 2 classic barn-like forms connected by a glass walkway. Each gable end of the home is clad in a three-dimensional panel system. The project is a high-performance home and is rated as a net-zero residence, creating more energy than it uses.

Located in the heart of the University of Arizona campus, the Albert B. Weaver Science-Engineering Library and Main Library renovations are an integral component to the Student Success District, a new ground-breaking addition to the University’s urban fabric. Designed by The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP in association with Poster Mirto McDonald, the library renovations are a part of the larger District estimated to be completed in the fall.

The central courtyard is anchored by a rusted steel-clad outdoor fireplace that separates the living wing of the house from the sleeping wing. Custom designed steel panels shade the great room doors in the summer with a pattern of the archetypal house form that features prominently on the Canal House elevations.

New Residence in Patagonia
The off-grid house emerges from the native grasses, Emery Oaks, and open ranges beyond in a simple rectangular form of 18” mass walls constructed of poured lava-crete. The material is comprised of a mixture of pulverized lightweight red scoria, cement, and water, rammed into formwork. These walls create the structure, finish and offer insulation and thermal mass all in one stroke.

A new six-story, 280,000-sqft, state-of-the-art facility in the heart of downtown Phoenix designed by Tomas Rossant of Ennead Architects, in collaboration with Jones Studio, BCLS was conceived and developed as a uniquely open urban environment where society and the study and practice of law converge.

Three simple volumes hover above the desert, responding to the challenges of the site and to an ethic of building with minimal disruption to the natural environment. The site slopes toward the west into a wash and is split by a smaller tributary valley, splitting the buildable area in half.

Sunrise Mountain Library
A replacement for a joint use public library in a high school that had been in existence for over ten years, the new building is a modern full-service regional library with a 100,000-piece collection. The facility utilizes RFID and self-service technology. Sliding glass walls and shelving on wheels allow for expanded programming space but is aesthetically pleasing when not in use.
