Seattle floating home on Portage Bay
Architect: Paul Wanzer of Hoshide Wanzar Architects

photo : Andrew Giammarco
The project began with the replacement of an ageing floating home that had occupied the slip for decades atop an old-growth log float, likely dating from the early twentieth century. While the original structure carried considerable history and character, its ageing infrastructure no longer met contemporary requirements for performance, maintenance and resilience.
The decision was therefore made to construct the new home on a concrete float manufactured by Dyna, providing significantly improved stability and durability while simplifying access to essential services such as plumbing and electrical systems. This new foundation establishes a robust platform for long-term occupation, ensuring the floating residence can adapt to future needs while remaining closely connected to its maritime setting.

Discovery Bay House, Port Townsend, Washington, United States of America
Design: Dekleva Gregoric Architects
Discovery Bay House, Washington: Pacific Northwest Forest USA
photo : Flavio Coddou
Nestled within the tranquil landscape of the Pacific Northwest, Discovery Bay House embodies a carefully balanced synthesis of intellectual rigour, artistic expression and a deep engagement with nature. Conceived as a bespoke residence, the project seeks to establish a meaningful dialogue between architecture, landscape and the lived experience of its occupants.
The house was commissioned by Michael Ross, who approached Dekleva Gregorič Architects after encountering and admiring an oceanfront residence the practice had previously designed in Maui, Hawaii. Drawn to the studio’s ability to combine spatial innovation with a sensitive response to place, the client sought a home that would similarly integrate contemporary architecture with the distinctive qualities of its natural setting.

Blatto Boat, Seattle, Washington houseboat
Architecture and Interiors: GO’C
Blatto Boat Seattle Washington houseboat
photo : Andrew Pogue
Blatto Boat is a new Floating On Water Residence (FOWR), or houseboat, located at the northern end of Lake Union and constructed within the footprint of an existing vessel. Rather than expanding beyond its inherited limits, the project embraces the constraints of its setting, transforming the dimensions of the original boat into an opportunity for spatial invention and efficiency.
Restricted by the over-water footprint of the previous structure, the residence occupies a slender plan measuring just 12 by 40 feet. This elongated geometry informed every aspect of the design, resulting in a carefully choreographed sequence of spaces that maximises light, views and functionality while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding water.

In-Kind House in Seattle, Washington property
Architecture and Interiors: GO’C
In-Kind House in Seattle Washington
photo : Kevin Scott
The ambition of the project was not to increase floor area or accumulate additional amenities, as is often the case with residential remodelling. Instead, the brief focused on creating a carefully considered home containing precisely the amount of space required to support the clients’ way of living — no more and no less.
This philosophy of restraint informed the entire design process, resulting in a house defined by efficiency, clarity and purpose rather than excess. In many respects, the project represents an equitable exchange for the modest 1950s brick house that previously occupied the site, replacing it not with a larger building, but with one more closely aligned with contemporary needs and aspirations.

Alden Mason House, Washington, USA
Architect: Ueda Design Studio
Alden Mason House Seattle Washington USA
photo : Kevin Scott
Designed in 1958 by architect Charles A. Marsh Jr. and builder Tom Paulsen for the celebrated Seattle artist Alden Mason, the Alden Mason House remains one of the Pacific Northwest’s most evocative examples of Mid-Century Modern residential architecture. Conceived as a retreat immersed in nature, the house is nestled among the trees with a lightness and intimacy that gives it the character of a treehouse suspended within the forest canopy.
Quietly positioned beside a gentle creek in woodland close to Lake Washington, the residence enjoys an atmosphere of remarkable seclusion and tranquillity. Despite its immersive natural setting, it remains within the city limits of Seattle, creating the almost surreal experience of inhabiting a woodland refuge at the heart of an urban environment.

The Colman Park House project started when the owners, living in Texas at the time, stumbled across this hidden gem of a house for sale. While the home is only two miles away from downtown Seattle it fees worlds away thanks to its parkside location.
