We’ve selected what we feel are the key examples of New Delhi Architecture. We aim to include Indian Buildings in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.
We cover completed Indian buildings, new building designs, architectural exhibitions and competitions across in New Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Shimla.
Architecture in New Delhi
Delhi has the forts – Red Fort, The Old Fort and Tughlakabad Fort which is now in ruins, mosques – the very famous Jama Masjid and Nizzamudin Mosque, and tombs – Humanyun’s Tomb, Safdarjung Tomb. Most of these were built during the reign of the Mughal. Qutub Minar – the tallest Minar in the world, Jantar Mantar – ancient sun dial, the Lotus Temple – which is not exactly a temple so to speak, the Birla Temple and many more. There is Chandni Chowk – the Old Delhi area with it’s old marketplaces, havelis and eating joints from pre-independence era.
Then there are more recent works like the India Habitat Center, India International Center and a whole set of architectural works in the Lodhi estate area, the LIC Building to mention a few. Since Delhi was ruled by many different dynasties, each has left behind it’s marks which can be easily traced back. That’s the fun bit in Delhi. It’s a rich city waiting to be explored.
As for Shimla, a hill station, it has got architectural works mainly dating back to the time of Britishers who developed it to a very great extent in terms of Railways which is deemed a World Heritage by UNESCO, they also developed the roadways in the hills. There is the Town Hall on the Mall Road, The Cathedral on the Ridge, The Gorton Castle which now serves as Head Quarters for Governor of the State, The Indian Institute of Advanced studies popular for it’s distinguished education, Schools all built during the British rule and are now being renovated and open for public.

Baardos La Citta, New Delhi Restaurant and Bar
The unchallenged grandeur of a city that still draws breath, confined to a space that emulates Roman architecture, Baardos La Citta, a fine dining venue is weaved into the urban fabric of this major Indian city. The design identity being inconsequential to its surroundings, creates an ecosystem within, to disconnect its users from the outside world.

Cuboid House
The project attempts to demonstrate the possibility of affirming some ‘principles’; some elementary yet precise rules. A series of spatial sequences are structured around minimal architectural events distributed throughout the house. These events are meant to be merely the background for the life of the future occupants and therefore recede into an almost imperceptible variation of light and shadow.

New Indian House
The Gairola House is an attempt to deviate from the usual peri-urban built typology in India, of a multi-deck apartment stack with identical floor plans and a common access staircase that usually neglects the role of the staircase, courtyard and setbacks as shared community spaces. It investigates the possibility of creating an extroverted multi-residence apartment stack that exploits the external volumes as shared resources for light and ventilation.
