Civil war and the 2004 tsunami wrought displacement and destruction in Sri Lanka. The Lanka Learning Centre has pentangular plan and integration into the landscape – the architects kept all the existing trees, which now provide shade to the complex.

This project provides 100 houses in a Muslim fishing village, in the region of Tissamaharama, on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, following the destruction caused by the 2004 tsunami.

The Two thousand Four boxing day tsunami was the worst natural disaster to hit Sri Lanka in living memory. The East and South coasts were totally devastated with 40,000 human casualities plus colossal damage caused to the road network, bridges, harbours, schools etc.

The Sri Lankan civil war between the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and the Sri Lankan Government was one of the most drawn out and tragic conflicts of modern times. Almost 30 years of fighting, much of which was fought in the North of the country, has resulted in over 100,000 deaths with thousands more displaced.

This Building was designed as a community center for a tsunami affected community in Southern Sri Lanka. Located in a Buddhist temple premises the community center was donated by an international humanitarian organization international federation of red cross and red crescent societies as a token of gratitude towards the chief monk of the temple who helped Tsunami effected communities in Southern Sri Lanka.

This Sri Lankan retirement home was designed as a ‘discreet hideaway look-out’ for clients who wanted to spend there retirement in quite solitude amongst the mountains. The house was built on stilts avoiding expensive retaining wall foundation systems to keep costs down as this was to be there second house.

The project was to build a Wooden Toy Factory on an abandoned Rubber estate, by a joint venture between a Norwegian investor and a Sri Lankan partner, with the toy products expected to be exported to the Nordic and Scandinavian Countries. The Norwegian client was to close down his wooden toy manufacturing facility in Czechoslovakia due to high labor cost in Europe and relocate the machinery and equipment to Sri Lanka.

The architects’ brief was to “convert an existing dilapidated Car Showroom Service Centre, to a Rocell Bathware Concept Centre, an elegant and stylish living space, with the task of stimulating and inspiring visitors was a challenging task”.
