A healthy new vision for Leamington Spa
Design: LDA Design

The Warwickshire town of Royal Leamington Spa is asking its residents what they would like to see included in a vison to strengthen its future.

LDA Design is helping the town explore options including for the main shopping street, Parade, which features some of the spa town’s finest Regency architecture. It is also the main traffic route crossing the river.

Norman Rourke Pryme is part of the team and is helping to examine how the town could become more welcoming for pedestrians and cyclists. The principles behind a new masterplan for Parade and for other important streets will be agreed with the community and stakeholders.

LDA Design Director Bernie Foulkes says the aim is to find out what a town like Royal Leamington Spa, built primarily around health and wellbeing more than 250 years ago, can tell us about how we should be living in the 21st century. “Like many towns, Leamington Spa is experiencing changing patterns in shopping, working and living, cost of living and housing need, climate breakdown, and nature loss. But the town has timeless qualities that continue to make it special and those can be harnessed to drive investment.”

Leamington Spa has already shown itself to be adaptable. Intriguing recent developments include a growing gaming and digital community, the biggest outside London. A creative quarter is also growing in the Old Town.

The project to revisit and revise a pre-pandemic vision is led by the District Council, County Council, Town Council, BID and Transformation Board.

The Mayor of Royal Leamington Spa, Cllr Alan Boad said, “Having a clear shared vision for the future of the town is important. It will help us to work with our partners and communities to deliver improvements to the town centre and will assist us in attracting investment and securing external funding. It is important that we hear residents’ views on these issues, and we encourage people to come along and participate.”

Leamington Spa residents are being invited to have their say at the annual town assembly taking place on Tuesday 12th March in the Assembly Hall, Royal Pump Rooms.

LDA Design

LDA Design’s purpose is to make great places and shape the world around us for the better. We are an employee-owned business made up of masterplanners, landscape architects, planners and urban designers, and we follow the principles of ‘first life, then spaces, then buildings’. Whether the project is an estate regeneration, new park or settlement or street network, we focus on the needs of people affected and on creating a balance with nature. We design sociable spaces which create opportunities for encounter and exchange. We have received more than 100 awards for urban renewal, contemporary and historic parkland design and historic town centre improvements.

LDA Design led the final landscape masterplan and detailed design of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of Europe’s most successful new parklands. Our projects include some of the UK’s most challenging and successful city public realm schemes, including London’s Battersea Power Station, Strand-Aldwych in Westminster and the West End Project with Camden Council – all multi award winners. We are currently working on plans to transform 110 The Queen’s Walk, formerly City Hall. Our vision to create a ‘common ground’ for East Bank, the most significant cultural investment in London since the South Bank, and our masterplan for UCL East are now being built out. We specialise in estate regeneration and high street renewal. Key work includes the creation of dramatically different public realm for Aberfeldy estate in east London and a landscape designed to foster community at Sighthill in Glasgow.

Astley Castle
This is a fortified manor built in the 12th century and progressively extended over the succeeding seven centuries. After a fire burnt out the roof and floors in 1978, its walls decayed and collapsed while a series of rescue attempts failed. In 2006 the Landmark Trust tried a final gambit: the creation of a contemporary house within the footprint of the castle remains, procured by architectural competition.
