Prestwood Infant School
Much-loved children’s author Roald Dahl was the inspiration for a new dining hall and after school facility in Buckinghamshire’s Prestwood Infant School. Its internationally renowned garden, created as a natural extension to the architect’s own house, unfolds as an intriguing series of ‘garden rooms’. Garsington Opera Pavilion
In the great English tradition of distrust of the new followed by rapid assimilation into permanency and subsequent listing, Garsington’s design concept is driven by the need for it to be a completely demountable ‘temporary’ structure. Although it is supposed to be taken down every autumn, the landowner likes it so much he already suggested leaving it in place after the first season.

Set in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, the stark inscrutability of a concrete monolith is interrupted by two vertical apertures. In contrast, the rear breaks down into floating blocks of rough-sawn timber, bush-hammered stone, and clear sheet-glass which diminish to the scale of the immediate landscape.
