Room Within a Room Competition
June 19 2018: Submission deadline
Win £2500 by designing a room within a room, with RIBAJ and Norbord.
A new competition from RIBAJ invites architects to design innovative workspaces inside a room in a house, public building or office.
Inspired by renaissance painting Jerome in his study by Antonello da Messina, which features a ‘room within a room’, the overall idea is to create a space of intense study within a much larger architectural volume.
To have the chance of winning first prize of £2500, the designer must consider the artistic, studious lifestyle of the user and utilise SterlingOSB, produced by Norbord.
Jan-Carlos Kucharek of RIBAJ says: “Judges will be looking for imaginative uses of the product and pioneering, transformative spatial ideas. It is totally open to the imagination, and originality is certainly encouraged. We’re extremely excited to see what creativity is out there.”
Three commended submissions will also receive £250 each and all shortlisted entries will be invited to the prizegiving event on 20th September 2018.
The competition is held in partnership with Norbord Europe and will be chaired by RIBA Journal. The deadline for entries is 19th June 2018.
Submissions should be sent to ribaj.roominaroom@riba.org

Think Vertical Create Vertical
Abstract
Call me Architecture. I am a product of a way of thinking. Over the years, I have presented myself as a dream of civilizations. I have found myself layered endlessly, while my contemporaries have evolved into rather noteworthy images of their primitive selves. Although I am interpreted differently in many a space and time, I may mean the same. I see myself as an instrument to elucidate problems. My nature of debates may have changed and my discipline altered, but I have existed with one and only one purpose: to serve. I remember and I do reflect.
Introduction
Although my learners have significantly cultivated newer spaces over the period of time where I have been transformed, twisted and determined to newer arrangements: it has been hard to perceive them not exploring a comfortable one for themselves. In fact, to be a student of architecture demands to be something other than the student at all the times. Hence, in the event of facilitating such an idea, I bring you an opportunity to paint me in the idea you want.
Brief
The open ideas competition invites participation from architects, designers and students to come up with an imaginary story of farming architectural learning into vertical derivative of a building. While there is no limit to one’s imagination, the competition would dwell in the historical city of Milan so as to gain a perspective of context and affairs around the place.
The participants are encouraged to deal with a unique and distinctive approach to the acknowledged domain of identity. We would indeed love to see architectural school as a comedy of individual errors which when unified produce a meaningful setting for ideas. Kindly avoid clichés as different traits of architecture schools and work towards more constructive programs. We ask you to go as much Up as possible to avoid the down.

Immortalised: A Design Competition
8 May 17.00 GMT: Submission Deadline
As part of the Immortalised season, Historic England are inviting proposals for new ways of remembering events, people and identities in the public realm.
2018 is a particularly significant year for anniversaries in England, with events up and down the country commemorating the end of the First World War and the victory of the Votes for Women campaign. New statues, plaques and monuments are planned to mark these important historical moments, helping bring to the surface previously overlooked stories and individuals. In response – and recognising that artists, architects and designers have always played a key role in shaping our commemorative landscape – we want to explore alternative approaches to public memory in England.
– What is an appropriate memorial for your chosen region to leave to future generations?
– What stories or individuals deserve greater recognition?
– How might different materials and design approaches change how we think about public memory?
– What creative alternatives might there be to tearing down contested statues?
The organisers are looking for critical and unexpected responses to these questions.
Proposals may be physical, permanent, temporary, preformative, intangible, or a mixture of the above. They should respond to the unique story of the individual, group or event being remembered, and to the proposed location of the memorial.
The ten successful applicants will receive £2,000 to develop their proposals for display in the Immortalised exhibition, and will be invited to the exhibition opening in September 2018.
This architecture competition is open to anyone over the age of 18.
Submissions are particularly welcome from individuals representing the below groups and/or interdisciplinary teams:
Architecture, art and design students
Campaign groups
Designers
Artists and other creative practitioners
Writers
Young architects and small practices
Local history and heritage groups

Camus Prague Architecture Competition
NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR ČESKÁ SPOŘITELNA
The biggest Czech bank is building its new headquarters – changing a brownfield neighbouring Prague’s historical core – supporting creation of a fresh, liveable city district – forming contemporary environment for its employees, visitors and inhabitants of Prague.
The subject of this architecture competition is an architectural proposal for the new headquarters of Česká spořitelna: Campus Prague, including its surroundings. The Announcer’s vision is to develop a building complex, in the inner city of Prague, that will go beyond the norm of a generic office building and that will represent a new model for the administrative organisation by accommodating the Announcer’s activities, as well as public services and amenities accessible to both employees and the general public. The goal is to shift the notion of contemporary office buildings: to prevent the complex becoming a “ghost city” after working hours and to conceive it as a liveable and operational part of Prague.

Shelter International Architectural Design Competition for Students 2017
In rural regions and fishing villages there still exist “commons” such as mountains, forests and water areas that are jointly managed and utilized by the local community. It could be said however, that such commons are almost nonexistent in urban areas (especially in Japan). This is because in the process of modernization, land, building, and objects were designated either under private ownership or public ownership, and a society based on systems of exchange through currency and redistribution through tax had in particular come to shape urban space.

With the rapid growth of technology and smart living there lies an opportunity for efficient spaces with the feeling of homeliness and personal touch points.

COSTA DEL SPRAWL Ideas Competition, Spain
Deadline for entries 23.59 GMT – 31 August 2017
Selected designs announced – 7 September 2017
Exhibition including shortlisted designs – 16 September 2017 – Monday 9th October 2017
Winner announced – 9 October 2017 after judging and public vote
For a second year the Costa del Sprawl ideas competition seeks creative solutions to improve the social, urban, and architectural situation in some of Costa del Sol’s sprawling neighbourhoods. This year’s competition is focused on the theme of ‘identity’ and invites participants to imagine a piece of architecture, whether building or space, which could be adopted as a model of contemporary vernacular architecture specific to the area of Riviera del Sol, and act as a precedent for the future planning and development of the neighbourhood.
Andalucía contains an exciting variety of vernacular and contextual architecture which has grown throughout its tumultuous history and within its diverse landscapes. From the labyrinthine streets of medieval fishing towns and gleaming white walls of hillside villages, to palatial citadels and capitals of once mighty empires, the architecture of Andalucía tells a compelling story and creates a strong sense of place and identity.
This sense of identity and reflection of context has all but vanished from contemporary architecture in Andalucía, and this is most notable in the sprawling neighbourhoods of the Costa del Sol which communicate little more than the capitalist speculation which lead to their existence. Nonetheless, this condition now forms a part of the area’s history and provides the point of departure for any future architectural, urban or planning projects.
