The Energy Endeavour Foundation and the SDE19 Organisation are in the midst of the Call for Teams for the ultimate international university-level competition for resource-responsible and energy-efficient architecture. The next edition of the Solar Decathlon Europe will take place in the summer of 2019 in Hungary, beyond Budapest in the beautiful city of Szentendre.
In support of a growing and collective commitment to energy literacy, the Energy Endeavour Foundation and the organisers of the 2019 Solar Decathlon Europe launched the selection process of university teams for the upcoming SDE19 competition. An official call for teams was made and deadlines for submissions are scheduled for October 27th, 2017.
Initiated in 2002 by the United States Department of Energy, the Solar Decathlon is a university-level student competition for sustainable, responsible, energy-efficient architecture and engineering. Twenty teams compete in the design, construction and management of individual, solar-powered, and energy and resource-efficient homes.
The houses are brought to the competition site (‘solar village’) and assembled within ten days. The site becomes an open forum and exhibition, where the houses are operated, demonstrated to the public, and evaluated by a jury of renowned international adjudicators. An international movement, editions of the Solar Decathlon competition take place in the U.S., Europe, China, Colombia with upcoming editions scheduled for Dubai and Morocco.
After three riveting Solar Decathlon Europe competitions in Spain (2010, 2012) & France (2014), the Solar Decathlon Europe 2019 will make its debut in central Europe hosted by the city of Szentendre, a riverside town in Pest county, near the capital city Budapest. The SDE19 will maintain the fundamental features of the Solar Decathlon with as key focus the revitalisation of building stocks. Thus, the scope of the contest centers around the value added renovation of an existing building.
The SDE19 partnership unites the local government of Szentendre, EMI, a non-profit organisation for quality control and innovation in building, and BME, the Budapest University of Technology & Economics. Managed by the Prime Minister’s Office, EMI directs major public renovation and building projects, including road and railway construction; EMI is a leading actor in the fields of national and international Research & Development & Innovation projects.
The Solar Decathlon Europe is stewarded by the Energy Endeavour Foundation, a Netherlands-based, non-profit organization which generates university research competitions and awareness activities in the fields of social, economic and environmental sustainability.
