Safari: Call for Entries
Eleven launches their eighth international architecture & design competition to imagine an innovative safari lodge in Zimbabwe.
Eleven has announced their latest ideas and design competition: ‘Safari: Zimbabwe 2017’. The magazine’s latest challenge calls on creatives from all around the world to design innovative concepts for a super sensory safari lodge in the heart of Matobo National Park.
In Swahili, the word ‘safari’ means journey, and this is exactly where Eleven wants to take you through their competition: a journey into the romance and adventure of the wild, into the customs, local rituals and the beating heart of Africa through your senses. The outcome of this journey? A new super sensory safari lodge concept the likes of which the world has never seen before, nestled in the heart of Matobo’s granite rock formations and mysterious ancient rock paintings.
Matobo – which holds a UNESCO status – is also a sanctuary for the endangered Black and White Rhino population and is, therefore, a key hub in the conservation efforts of this rare animal. Aside from the rhinos, the park is home to a whole variety of African wildlife. All in all, this makes Matobo a magical safari location to dive deep into the natural and cultural wonders this country has to offer.
Eleven and their partners African Bush Camps are looking for a super sensory safari lodge, the first one in the world, which uses design as a pivotal part of the experience. How can architecture become a mechanism for experiencing the adventure, magic and romance of a safari in Matobo? You decide.
In this challenge, Eleven welcomes creatives (professionals and/or students) to join in. Participants, who can compete individually or in a team of up to two people, are asked to register and submit their proposals online by the 11th of January 2018, in the form of two digital A1 horizontal sheets and 500 words explanation text. Models are highly encouraged but are not mandatory.
For this competition, Eleven have partnered up with the amazing African Bush Camps, an award-winning African-based Safari Company, with eleven safari lodges in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia and have been providing innovative, professional and unique experiences in some of the wildest and remote areas of outstanding natural beauty in Southern Africa. African Bush Camps wish to take their guests into the untamed African wilderness, allowing for unique encounters, thrilling adventures and memorable journeys to be discovered. Their passion and drive for maintaining environmentally friendly, minimal impact designs also ensures that African Bush Camps promote responsible tourism and conservation.
The lucky winners will be able to experience first hand the unforgettable adventure of Zimbabwe by winning 2 places onto African Bush Camps’ Super Sensory Safari, located in the stunning Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe.

The competition, which officially opens for registration on Monday the 11th of September 2017, is scheduled to run for four months, closing on the 11th of January 2018 at 11:00am (UK Time). Awarded entries – competing for a safari holiday, cash prizes and publication – will be officially announced on the 11th of March 2018.
‘Safari’ is Eleven’s eighth international competition to date. Since their creation in mid-2015, the challenges launched by this UK based magazine and creative agency have received great international success. Previous challenges have been exhibited in Europe and the USA, published in multiple international magazines such as the Architecture Review, the AJ, Dezeen, Archdaily and Designboom, and have been featured in Bustler’s ‘Top-10 Best Competitions of the Year Awards’ in both 2015 and 2016.
