The Sixth Form College Farnborough, has celebrated the completion of its campus development with a topping out ceremony for a £5 million new arts, IT and physics building, conducted by David Bell, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Children Schools and Families.

The ceremony marked the completion of the top floor slab and overall structure of the iconic new building which will be opened for the new academic year, September 2009.

Designed by Broadway Malyan and constructed by Bowen plc, the 3,052 m², three storey building will form the focal point of the college’s campus offering a holistic approach to education through a building which combines the demands of the arts, computing/ IT and physics curricula.

The building has been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, incorporating sustainable design which minimises energy consumption and maximises the use of natural daylight, ventilation and night time cooling. Rain harvesting for WCs and landscape irrigation has also been included.

As part of the enabling and demolition works Bowen utilised local labour and recycled material for the construction activities together with alternative construction methods such as pre-fabrication and resourcing material from a sustainable source. The construction site is also recording the waste management process and is currently awarded full points under the BREEAM assessment for Colleges.

The second building which Broadway Malyan has created at the college, the project encompasses architecture, interior design and landscaping, and was driven by the company’s Reading team:
“Key to the creation of this building was embracing the diversity of science, art, computing and teaching under one roof, to create an environment which encourages interaction and shared learning,” commented Clare Bowman, associate architect for Broadway Malyan’s Reading office.

“Based around a white open box design, the building is fragmented by transparent, opaque and coloured glass which enabled the creation of glazed atrium break-out and social circulation space in which the students can showcase their work. This is an iconic and highly accessibly building which we’re confident will prove to be an inspired place in which to study and share knowledge.”

Dr John Guy OBE, Principal of The Sixth Form College, Farnborough added: “Broadway Malyan has created a striking central building for the campus which perfectly embodies our enthusiasm and commitment to learning. The architectural team worked closely with college staff to identify perceived needs and offer solutions which were in fact better than our original brief, such as the creation of curriculum team work rooms which have become a feature of the College.

“The light, bright environment of this new building is perfectly conducive to learning and Broadway Malyan’s subtle inclusion of inspiring Haiku quotations written by our students has helped ensure it is a truly collaborative project.”

Bowen plc has ensured at all times that construction activities will not effected the College teaching times and have made all efforts possible to keep this to an absolute minimum. The 6th Form College, Farnborough is currently on programme and the Bowen team is pleased to report that they are in line to achieve a Considerate Contractors award after receiving a high site monitoring report score.
