Albatross Residence, Gold Coast, Qld
The Albatross Residence is a three-storey pair of beach residences with an east-facing aspect toward the pacific ocean, situated along a narrow, busy thoroughfare. An array of vertical fins is deployed to serve multiple functions including sun-shading, privacy, curation of views, and to modulate the scale of the overall form.

The clients for this contemporary Tasmanian home came with a concept and preferred building system – Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). The design was refined and developed into its final form, with the construction being a hybrid of timber framing for the floors, and SIPs for the walls and ceilings.

The Panopticon House project is a hybrid of modernist and classical rural villa ideals, exploring the house as figured object versus the disappearing enclosure. Located in rural Victoria, on a prominent hilltop with panoramic views across the surrounding landscape, the Great Southern Ocean, Bass Strait and the Tasman Ocean.

At probably half the size of many houses that now line the metro beachfront, this contemporary property is like that new kid in the playground dwarfed by the surrounding bullish show-offs. Emulating the old shacks, she touches the ground lightly, respecting the dune and blurring the boundary to the adjacent reserve.

This beach home replaces the client’s dilapidated but loved 1960s beach shack. To maintain a ‘shack’ feel, materials are natural, robust and low maintenance, and the simple square footprint was influenced by the previous dwelling.

The site overlooking the Mornington Peninsula is approached by a long winding drive through an established vineyard. On approach, the house gives little away, presenting an abstract, modest façade as it appears from behind a break in a large hedge.

This forest clearing addressing a pocket of rainforest in the Noosa hinterland, is approached through a typical neighbourhood of rural houses and acreage dwellings. The journey to the house continues from the street via a winding bush track through the forest which acts as a threshold between the constructed world and that of the clearing, a place remnant of early settlement in the region; a camp.

In essence, the brief for Stratum was to create a beautiful, modernist home that celebrated views over the adjacent golf course to the rear of the property. Joe Adsett Architects were presented with a design challenge of capturing both the South facing views and desirable North facing amenity.

This Australian property is located on 25 acres of bush in the hills immediately to the west of the Lorne township, Victoria. It is a retreat allowing the clients to disconnect from the world of city, noise, and work as they come together to reconnect and begin a 30-year project to rejuvenate the surrounding bushland.

This property alteration is a modern pavilion addition providing a striking contemporary insertion into an existing character home. At the point of opening the front door you are emotively pulled through the space to the rear where a large open plan living volume expands linear in an east-west direction.
