With the state of USA’s legal education a hot topic of current debate, Arizona State University is poised to reinvent the law school experience—both in program and design—with its new Arizona Center for Law and Society.
Designed by Tomas Rossant of Ennead Architects in collaboration with Jones Studio, this new $130 million, six-story modern facility in downtown Phoenix opens itself up to the public as a place where society and the study and practice of law converge.
Dean Douglas Sylvester of ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law understands that a bold new approach to educating young lawyers had to be supported by an equally innovative building design: “The legal landscape has changed, that is clear, but while others are offering less and slashing services, ASU is building a new facility that reflects our values of optimism—providing more services and opportunity to both our students and the community at large.”
“We make buildings that act as institutional change agents,” explains Rossant. “The new Arizona Center for Law and Society will reposition the law school as a public building where the law hits the street. It is designed as a conduit for connecting ASU’s progressive legal scholarship with its commitment to the community, providing the nation’s first not-for-profit teaching law firm and a public interest law clinic—all serving to reengage common citizens in the fundamental importance of the law in our daily lives.”
