One of the largest research centers in Europe

C. F. Møller Architects | Berg Arkitektkontor has won the competition for a new, modern, 70,000 m2 research center for the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm – one of the world’s leading medical universities. The Karolinska Institute is well-known worldwide for nominating the candidates for the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology.

The new laboratory building, called Biomedicum, will be the workplace for research powerhouse of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, accounting for approx. 40 per cent of the medical research in Sweden. With its 70,000 m2 it will become one of the largest medical research centers in Europe as well as Sweden’s largest laboratory building.

The project is exactly twice as large as the 35,000 m2 extension and conversion of the Panum complex at the Copenhagen University with new laboratory facilities – a competition, C. F. Møller Architects won just last year with a 16-story, identity-creating, sculptural research tower in the centre of Copenhagen. Recently, another similar project by C. F. Møller Architects was inaugurated in Norway: a nine-storey laboratory building of 23.000 m2 at Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen.

Leading in Scandinavia

In connection with the win, architect and partner of C. F. Møller Mads Mandrup states:

“We are very proud – not least because we’ve managed to land three of the most high-profile laboratory buildings for medical research in the Nordic region within a short period of time. It is a confirmation of the company’s leading position in Scandinavia when it comes to research, health and education architecture.”

“It is a result of our focus on the Nordic markets, where we have chosen to be locally rooted – with offices in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden – and subsequently grow through intense knowledge and resource sharing between our respective offices,” he says. Furthermore C. F. Møller Architects has a branch office in London.

C. F. Møller Architects | Berg Arkitektkontor is the result of a takeover of the Swedish company Berg Arkitektkontor by C. F. Møller Architects in 2007.

Last year, four teams were invited to participate in the competition – the three others were the Swedish companies Nyréns Arkitektkontor, AIX, and Sweco.

Construction is expected to begin in 2013 and to be completed in 2017
