NOVUM BIOCITY : THE BUILDING
18 Dec 2008
Novum BioCity is the new research – and laboratory centre at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. The building will comprise of approximately 70,000 m2, mainly laboratories.
Novum BioCity aim to make a creative environment, where the building creates possibilities for researchers and laboratory staff to meet, create synergies and explore areas of mutual interest across the disciplines. The building becomes a hub for research- and hospital activity, an arena for research and development and a living venue for researchers, laboratory staff and the public.
The main tenants in Novum BioCity are Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Laboratory. Karolinska Institutet is one of Europe’s largest medical universities and Karolinska University Hospital is one of Europe’s largest hospitals. Novum BioCity will become a modern laboratory building that connects the clinical and preclinical research and as well as connects the hospital’s analytical departments.
The vision with Novum BioCity is to create an integrated building in the university area, but at the same time an independent building, an innovative mix of the city, the rational and the common as well as an efficient, flexible and general building.
THE FUTURE
In the process towards a built building there will be a close dialogue with the future tenants to further develop the ideas. It is important that the building’s open and flexible physical structure continuously is filled with renewing ideas that can attract researchers and laboratory staff to the building to cooperate and develop. Faraway guests will also be inspired to come to Novum BioCity because this is where the knowledge, equipment and the will exist.

The focus on sharing of knowledge in research- and educational buildings means that the learning environment is no longer restricted to the traditional lecture theatre, offices or labs.
The research buildings are organised around open spaces with facilities for dialog, brainstorm and informal meetings. The Biotech Centre Stockholm is layed-out around two distinctive atria that form the two cores of the building emphasising the activity and people within.
