Asplund Architecture Competition – News Update
Stockholm City Council has abandoned this project following funding problems and due to pressure from various groups opposed to building so close to Asplund’s celebrated design. No clear reason has emerged though removal of extensions to Asplund’s building and proximity of the proposed design have been stated.
Ed. Irrespective of whether one thinks the competition or indeed the winning entry were appropriate, there needs to be much more effort to ensure winning competition entries are built. So much architects’ time is wasted on these competitions, for example the Cardiff Opera House contest won by Zaha Hadid Architects, only to never make the light of day.
