The Portuguese Council of Architects – Northern Chapter launched the Call For Ideas – International Competition | Urban regeneration of the block Aurifícia Porto, Portugal, which intends to define urban regeneration strategies for the block bounded by Álvares Cabral Street, by República Square and Mártires da Liberdade Street, by Bragas Street, and by Cedofeita Street.

Before designing this project the architects visited and analyzed other similar spaces trying to find some errors that could be corrected. They found out that a basic error being committed was that most of these services only had one type of space. This design attitude ignored the variation of mood one feels during the day, or even one is alone or with friends, needs a place to read a book or just wants to socialize.

A group of buildings for the new facilities of the College Cebes (secondary school), which is situated in Foz do Douro, in the municipality of Porto. The project proposes a building that is based on the integration in the surrounding environment characterized by single-family luxury homes, volumes somewhat fragmented, with balconies and rooftops.

On a street corner on the Foz of the Douro in Oporto, where once have existed a square and a fountain, the new roads, were built higher “sinking” the pre-existing buildings. Some of the buildings, unfortunately, were replaced, others with some difficulties resisted.

Located in the “Galeria de Paris” street, amidst the downtown area of Porto. The redesign sought to implement and structuralize the space, creating its own identity. The solution was formalized through the texture and the colour of the wood, which defines the space and provides depth to the structure’s design.

Oporto architect : Alvaro Siza
Alvaros Siza was educated at the University of Porto School of Architecture – Escola de Belas Artes between 1949 and 55. Later in his career he went on to teach at the Oporto School of Architecture, Portugal. Alvaros Siza Architects have had a Studio in Porto since 1954.
