A former hotel to make way for a $42m hotel, apartment and corporate office complex under a proposal designed by award-winning Australasian architecture firm The Buchan Group.

According to the awards jury with its “bold response to a sustainable imperative, the building proudly declares its passive technology”, which includes a giant funnel that draws natural air through the workplace. The jury noted how “vertical activity integration and social spaces combine with innovative solar daylight harvesting technology and sunscreens to help energise a substantial and mobile working community.”

Christchurch Airport Regional Terminal
This building received the Commercial Award as a building that the jury noted “is an excellent portal to and from the regional airports of New Zealand”. They also commended the architects BVN Donovan Hill in association with Jasmax for their subtle and sympathetic use of materials.

World Building of the Year at World Architecture Festival 2013
Commending the winning project on behalf of the festival’s super-jury, Paul Finch, WAF Programme Director, said “The winning project transcended category types. You could say it is about new and old, or civic and community, or display. It contrasts the manmade and the natural, and the relationship between art and science.”

Waterfall Bay House
The only site access was by boat; construction methodology was carefully considered and some elements of the building had to be prefabricated and helicoptered into place. There was also a strong environmental element to this house, with use of recycled timbers, solar water heating, natural ventilation and water collection.

Beach Retreat
Three of the wings are cut deep into the hillside: one of them has the pasture rolling across the roof. The central wing is identified by the elegant curves of a hyperbolic parabaloid roof which floats over the multiple living areas.

Brown Vujcich House
This residence is located on a narrow site in the heart of Herne Bay. The entry space is protected by a vertical cedar screen. Interior spaces use hoop pine cabinetry and externally materials include fine vertical cedar shiplap and double skin bagged brick.

A decision was made to orientate the bach towards this powerful silhouette of mountains. Through our previous forays into bach design we became increasingly convinced of the importance of the outdoor room, so it was decided that this room would perform as a kind of viewing platform of the mountains.

The site with which the architects were presented was extremely challenging in that it was 90% covered in mature pohutukawa trees, the site being a part of a continuous belt of forest that edges the road along the beach front. The circumstances not so much allowed, but dictated a sensitive poetic response to a building that, in order to exist would require the destruction of a large number of mature trees.

The relationship between spaces is ordered around the contention that the covered outside deck is the primary space. The covered deck is flanked by a sun trapped court and the kitchen and dining space.

Situated up a long driveway far from the road this home is in a private setting surrounded by trees and with a beautiful distant view towards the Tasman Sea. The owners’ brief called for a large two storey home that was “different” but functional and easy to live in.

Knoll Ridge Cafe
This spectacular building is located at Whakapapa Ski Field on Mt. Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park. Situated on the side of a mountain the commercial ski field is sited on New Zealand’s largest active volcano. Designing a building for such a severe environment proved challenging.

Architectural design of the new shopping precinct in the Cashel Mall, Christchurch. Following the devastating earthquake the Brisbane architects in conjunction with their Christchurch arm, was invited to join the Re:START Group to draw on its retail expertise to help re-establish a temporary retail hub in the Christchurch CBD.

Forsyth Barr Stadium
This 2011 Rugby World Cup Venue in southern New Zealand, is the world’s first permanently enclosed, natural turf stadium and hosted four fixtures during the Rugby World Cup. Designed by international architecture and design practice Populous, and in association with the local firm Jasmax, the new stadium replaces the legendary Carisbrook House of Pain.
