Como Property

This Lake Como vacation home is in the town of Menaggio, Italy. The owners are a young Russian couple, the husband a well-known Moscow media mogul. The house was originally designed in the ’60s, and though its exterior – and certainly its location – were promising, its cramped, dated interiors required extensive renovation.

The plan by Studio Alhadeff simplified the interior spaces, orienting them as much as possible outward, toward the lake. The ground floor was transformed into a warm flow of private and public space, all of htem graced by the view and the spectacular light which illuminates the light-wood interior.

Alhadeff also inserted a freestanding curvilinear stair which threads a visual sensuality throughout both floors of the house, a recurring reminder of the home’s tactile simplicity. The grounded, welcoming atmosphere of the house, combined with the sweeping views of the lake and the Alps beyond to the south, create a unique feeling of being sheltered yet connected to nature.

Striking examples of prototypical modernist furniture form an exciting contrast to the peaceful design of the interior. A guest house adjacent to the main structure is entirely of Alahdeff’s design, and it reinterprets the older villa in a streamlined, contemporary idiom. With its mixture of local authenticity and cosmopolitan refinement, the Menaggio project is a perfect demonstration of Alhadeff’s uniquely international perspective as well as the lifestyle of the client.
