Designed by the London office of NBBJ, the 13,900 sqm centre will bring scientists, clinical researchers, and a healthcare clinic together under one roof.

The five-storey development creates clinical and research space to accommodate 400 scientists and clinicians and allow for 40,000 endoscopy procedures annually.

Wates Construction went on site earlier in 2016.

Research teams focusing on the gut microbiome, healthy aging, food innovation, and food safety from the Institute of Food Research, the University of East Anglia, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s gastrointestinal endoscopy facility will occupy the space. The Quadram Institute will accommodate around 300 research scientists, as well as clinicians and approximately 40,000 outpatients per year.

The four-storey design focuses on being flexible and adaptable to future change. Lab and office spaces will be open-plan in an effort to “promote a more social work style” and “encourage collaborative working and impromptu interaction.”

The architectural design is comprised of two distinct buildings connected by a large atrium and roof light. Office accommodation is housed in a glass, daylight-filled space with terracotta sunshades facing south”.

Building of a new £81.6m facility to house the Quadram Institute begins this month, with an anticipated opening in 2018:

“Laboratory accommodation to the north is located in a brick-clad structure with windows to promote energy efficiency and to keep the labs at an optimum temperature. Long-format, handmade bricks reflect the natural qualities associated with local stonewall construction.”

A glass entrance space and atrium connects the laboratory and office blocks, and additionally houses shared and public facilities, including a lecture theatre and staff restaurant. Outside, the Institute will be linked to a new pedestrian boulevard, which will become a main cross-campus link on the research park. The project is expected to be completed in February 2018.

Quadram Institute

The Quadram Institute is a new centre for food and health research. The facility is to provide a step-change in interdisciplinary food and health research with new state-of-the-art facilities now under construction and due to be open in 2018.

Located on the Norwich Research Park, the Quadram Institute (QI) will integrate research teams from the Institute of Food Research (IFR) and the University of East Anglia (UEA)’s Faculty of Science and Norwich Medical School with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) gastrointestinal endoscopy facility.

The initial investment of £86.1million for the Quadram Institute is being provided by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) together with IFR, NNUH & UEA.
