Turn End House and Garden Patron News

Turn End Trust was set up to promote the integration of building and garden design; enable public access to Turn End house and garden and other examples of post-war housing design; and to conserve and maintain Turn End, its gardens and associated buildings. The Trust helps inspire architects, landscape architects, garden design lovers and people who care about good design through its annual programme of events.

Dominic is a qualified Landscape Architect, Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute with some thirty years’ experience. He is the designer of the Eden Project in Cornwall and was recognised for this through the Landscape Institute Peter Youngman Award 2006 and being granted Fellowship of the Institute of Horticulture. He was awarded an OBE for conservation in 2015 and the Royal Horticultural Society Vietch Memorial Medal in 2017. Throughout his career Dominic has engaged with the specialist area of Historic Parks and Gardens and is well known in the profession. He is President of the Gardens Trust and was Chairman of the National Trust Gardens Advisory Panel 2008-2015. Dominic set up his own landscape architecture practice, DCLA, in February 2012.

Dominic was a founding Trustee of the Turn End Charitable Trust in 1998 and is currently one of Turn End’s garden advisors.  He says ‘I am delighted to become a Patron of Turn End Trust.  Turn End is special; a unique example of beautiful home scaled buildings set in an exquisite garden, both designed by Peter including his remarkable eye for planting.’

Peter Aldington, creator of Turn End and renowned for his ethos of linking building to landscape said it was wonderful to welcome Dominic Cole to the Trust and have his support.  The Trust also has the support of existing Patrons, Lord Palumbo and Richard Murphy.

Dominic, who was on the Project Board for the Geoffrey Jellicoe Hemel Hempstead Water Gardens that received funding from Heritage Lottery Fund in 2014 has teamed up with Karen Fitzsimon, a Trustee of Turn End, to host one of the 2019 events run by the Trust.  It includes an architecture and landscape design tour to Jellicoe Water Gardens on 3 July 2019.  The Water Gardens are a significant example of post-war modernist landscape and are Grade II listed on the Register of Parks and Gardens.  With expert guidance from garden historians and the landscape architects responsible for the restorations, partakers will be given special insight to the important features of the site and the restoration challenges.  Please register your interest at turnendtrustevents@gmail.com

Turn End Trust Events Programme

Turn End House and Garden / Peter Aldington – August / September Events

In the heart of Haddenham (Buckinghamshire) is Turn End, one of a cluster of three 1960s village houses, all listed at Grade 2*, designed and built by architect Peter Aldington. Its internationally renowned garden, created as a natural extension to the architect’s own house, unfolds as an intriguing series of ‘garden rooms’. Turn End Trust, established to promote the integration of building and garden design and conserve the Turn End estate, hosts an annual programme of events which includes these forthcoming events.

Peter has the rare distinction of having had all 9 houses he has designed listed, more than any other living architect in the UK.

Turn End Trust is hosting its second House and Garden Open Day on Monday 28th August 2017: 14.00-17.30 (August Bank Holiday Monday) and a Turn End Talk with Dr. Alan Powers (Trustee and former Chairman of the Twentieth Century Society) on ‘Modern Houses – the Smooth and the Hairy’ on Saturday 2nd September 2017: 14.30 in Haddenham Methodist Church, then Turn End garden. Further details below. Booking at turnendtrust.eventbrite.co.uk or email turnendtrustevents@gmail.com

House and Garden Open Days
Monday 28th August 2017: 14.00-17.30. Booking or email turnendtrustevents@gmail.com
£15 (Friends: free, children: free)

Visit Turn End, Peter and Margaret Aldington’s 1960s self-built family home, and its glorious sequence of gardens. Be inspired by their concrete, wood and glass house, grown out of its surroundings, and see first-hand how village housing can be modern and traditional. Enjoy a warm welcome from the Trustees and Volunteers of the Turn End Trust and discover more about the work of the Trust to conserve and make Turn End available for future generations. Books about Turn End and the work of Peter Aldington on sale together with plants from Turn End’s small nursery. Teas and homemade cakes.

Turn End Estate (The Turn, Middle Turn and Turn End) received a Royal Institute of British Architects Award for Architecture in 1970. On July 15 1998, the three buildings were added to the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest. They were upgraded to II* in 2006; only a handful of post-war houses are listed at this grade.

As modern housing, made of wood, concrete block and glass, in a traditional setting, the group has always been celebrated as a rare British representative amongst the best of European housing design, and has welcomed visitors from all over the world. It has provided teaching material for students of architecture and landscape design, been written about nationally and internationally and photographed widely.

He has specialised in the history of the private house in the Modernist period, and was the author of ‘Twentieth Century Houses in Britain’, as well as ‘Aldington, Craig and Collinge’.
