Diller Scofidio + Renfro Wins Chinese ‘eco-island’ Design Contest
New York architects studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro have won the South Sea Pearl architectural contest to design an eco-friendly tourist destination on an artificial island in Haikou Bay in Hainan, China.
The design office beat nine other architecture practices, including Foster + Partners and UNStudio.
Nanhai Pearl Artificial Island (Chinese: 南海明珠人工岛) is an artificial island under construction off the coast of Holiday Beach in Haikou Bay, Haikou, Hainan, China.
The island is being developed and is owned by HNA Group. As of April 2016, it consists of a roughly circular body of land with a bridge providing access to and from the shore. It will ultimately become a visitor attraction with hotels.
The crescent-shaped island is 250 hectares in size and located off the coast of Hainan, China, a larger island in the South China Sea with a population of 9 million.
The design competition for the master plan and central buildings on a man-made island in Haikou Bay, China, is run by HNA Group.
The island, called the South Sea Pearl (and Nanhai Pearl Artificial Island), will be an eco-tourism hub with housing, a cruise ship port, a yacht harbor, hotels, resorts, a theme park, and more.
HNA Group is the owner of several other properties in the area and across China, including the supertall skyscraper Haikou Tower due to be completed in 2020. They also own Hainan Airlines, the fourth largest airline in China.
According to ArchDaily, Vincente Guallart was selected to create a strategic vision for the island. Guallart told ArchDaily the goal was to “achieve a new urban development based on ecological principles.”
The ten architecture studios that competed to design the island were:
Foster + Partners, London
Morphosis Architects, Los Angeles
Office of Architecture, Barcelona
Diller Scofidio + Renfro, New York
Iroje Architects & Planners, Seoul
UNStudio, Seoul / Netherlands
KuiperCompagnons, Rotterdam
The Jerde Partnership, Los Angeles
CCDI, Beijing
Boston International Design Group, Boston
Construction is expected to begin in 2017 with completion in 2027.
